OK Let's start with his birth.

September qtr 1871, Macclesfield registration district, vol 8a, page 112

SHERD, John Thomas

That leads us to a possible sighting in 1881:
Reference RG11/4102/34/43
70 Hanover Street, Castleton, Rochdale, Lancashire

SHEARD, Daniel  Head  Widower  M  28  General Labourer  b Macclesfield
SHEARD, John Thos  Son  M  9  b Macclesfield
SHEARD, Matilda  Daughter  F  7  b Macclesfield
SHEARD, Joseph  Son  M  5  b Sudden, Lancs
SHEARD, James  Son  M  3  b Castleton, Lancs

10 years on, I can't find Daniel.
Deaths, December qtr 1882, Rochdale, 8c, 57
SHEARD, Daniel

However reference RG12/3331/50/46, 34 Lower Mere Lane, Castleton

Johnson, Sarah  Head  Widow  F  61 Living on her own means  b Rochdale
Johnson, James R  Son  M  21  Wool sorter  b Rochdale
Sherd, Matilda  Adopted Daughter  F  17  Cotton Weaver  b Macclesfield
+ daughter, son-in-law and grandson

Could this indicate a Sherd family tragedy?

Also (very strange?!) reference RG12/3326/45/3, Butterworth

Lees, James  Head  Widower  M  64  Coal Miner  b Wolstenholme
Lees, Abel  Son  M  26  Coal Miner, Wolstenholme
Sutcliffe, George A  Son  M  20  Coal Miner  b Prickshaw
Sheard, Joseph  Son  M  16  Coal Miner  b Castleton
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

EcclesCake2003, can you give the source for your data please?

Mottram would have then been in the Ashton under Lyne reg district (Lancashire).
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/ashton%20under%20lyne.html

There are no matching births for a John Sh*rd in 1870-1872. As KGarrad has found there are other births in other areas or he may not have been registered.

Hi - the most likely sites to find the parents' marriage and any for the siblings are the IGI on the "old" familysearch site or the new version. Both are free to access and search, but there is maintenance preventing searches as I type, so here are the links:
IGI ("old" familysearch site)
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
(Under "search records" select "advanced search" then "international genealogical index")

"new" familysearch site
https://www.familysearch.org/

You can search the IGI by place then name by using the links provided in the Hugh Wallis pages  - so with this you can check all the Sheards in Mottram records:
