I've looked through the registers of Crockenhill and, if my memory serves me correctly, it was popular for fruit picking etc..

Crockenhill is a short walk from my house. It is very old village that was the site of pottery manufacture although few very old houses stll exist. Later it was a significant site for market gardening, especially strawberries & jam making but now most of the residents are employed elsewhere.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Hi Cushybokt

What time of year was Mary Ann born? Her family could have been in the area for the hop-picking, usually around September/October.

Best wishes

Can you tell us when/where/whom she married?  Have you found her on all the available census?  All these might give clues as to her origins.

I can see 3 William PACKMANs in that area, two with a wife called Mary ............ could you please clarify which couple it is you are researching ................. can you name the children or tell us when and where they appear on a census to make sure we are on the right track.  The problem is that the Mary who says she was born Crockenhill says she was born c1828 whilst the one born c1821 says  she was born Ash near Ridley.

Was it 1821 or 1921? Both appear in the posts by Cushtybokt.
