What happened to Edward Henry Burrows and Martha Fisk - Clapham 1858?
« on: Friday 14 January 11 20:33 GMT (UK) »
I have a marriage between Edward Henry Burrows and Martha Fisk - May 12 1858 at Clapham parish church.  Their addresses are just given as Clapham; Edward's father a Shepherd and Martha's father a Fisherman.  Neither witness is obviously related - Edward Armitage and Susan Tarrant.

I'm looking for an Edward Henry Burrows of about this time in Clapham so I would love to see what happened to these two but can't find them in any census after this marriage.

If any of you wonderful Rootschatterers out there could find them - I'd be very appreciative.  :D

Many thanks
Simon

How are this couple related to you?

If you are descended from one of their children - you must have some details of that child that could help find them on a census

You haven't included the information that Edward was 24 (1834)  and Martha 29 (1829) when they married

Where was Edward born?

They went to Suffolk after the marriage.

3 children baptised at Corton, Suffolk:

Anne Louisa b.3/1/1859, bp.13/2/1859 dau. Edward Henry Burrows/Martha
Samuel James b.17/11/1861, bp.9/12/1862            ditto
Edith Mary b.15/12/1863, bp.7/2/1864                    ditto

1861 Census - Corton, Suffolk

Henry Burross   27    Fisherman    b. Chesterford, Cambridgeshire
Martha   "           32                         b. Corton, Suffolk
Ann    "                2                                ditto

Ref. RG9 - 1188 - 30 - 4

So he'd dropped the Edward, and become a fisherman.

1871 - Corton, Suffolk

Martha now widowed and living with the 3 children baptised above

Ref. RG10 - 1781 - 33 - 19.

1851 Census shows Edward H. Burrows 16   b.Little Chesterford living with Seaman family and shown as nephew.

Ref. HO107 - 1786 - 267 - 8

Assuming Little Chesterford is on border of Cambridgeshire/Essex as appears as Essex on census.

In 1841 E H appears as Henry Burrows and possibly living with grandfather George - ref. HO107 - 340 - 4 - 4 - 3.

In 1841 Martha and family have been transcribed as Fooks - ref HO107 - 1029 - 8 - 10 - 15

Many thanks Annette7 for finding them.  Unfortunately for me it's a positive negative - it rules them out of the Edward Burrows I'm looking for - still that's something I suppose!

I have an Alfred Ephfrom (Ephraim) (sometimes known as Edward) Burrows (sometimes also given as Barrows) born about 1868 in Clapham/Lambeth who's father was Edward Burrows.  Apart from a possible entry for Alfred in the 1891 census, I as yet have not been able to find them before his marriage to Harriet Stratford in 1893.

Thanks again
Simon

His signature on his 1893 marriage cert is definitely Barrows - not Burrows.  His father was Edward Barrows - labourer - deceased

Alfred was 25 - occ newsagent

I now don't think I relate to this Edward and Martha Burrows from the census info that Annette7 generously supplied.

But I definitely do descend from Alfred Burrows/Barrows and Harriet Stratford.  And yes Harriet in the 1871 census is given as born on The Isle of Dogs - and in the 1901 census as the Isle of Wight! The Stratford family are actually from St Helier in Jersey, although they moved to London before Harriet's birth.

Alfred and his father Edward are definitely written as Barrows, but this constantly varies with Burrows on other documents.  I have looked for both spellings.

So I'm still after Alfred's father Edward and mother - at least I've eliminated Edward Henry Burrows and Martha Fisk from my enquiries.  :-\

I'd be grateful of any other ideas!

Many thanks for your interest.
