Jamaican Ancestors
« on: Friday 14 January 11 20:39 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I'm looking for a relative of mine called Lucinda Grant.
I know she died 6th Feb 1963 in Seaford Town, Westmoreland, Jamaica. The same record gives her age at 60 (which is incorrect, as her eldest child was born in 1913 so I suspect she was closer to 70).

However, as with most records I am now looking for, there are rarely any Father's registered, and records are often filed with the Mother's surname (which I dont know) or no surname at all.

I was wondering if there was a common way around this that someone could please share with me? At present it baffles me how people can get very far under these circumstances as i'm used to the slightly neater England & Wales collection  ;D

Thanks in advance,

Dale

Have you tried FamilySearch.org?  When the page comes up scroll down and a list of Countries comes us including South America and West Indies.  A lot of information which may help is available.

There is also a a site called Jamaicanfamilysearch.com (some parts are paying),
but may help you.

Good hunting.

Thanks for the reply.

All of the information I have was from the LDS centre or the Familysearch website. That's how I know the information is incomplete.

I have visited Jamaicanfamilysearch but the bits I've seen don't look terribly useful in comparison with what I've seen through the other places and I'm a bit reluctant to pay for it as a result

I see that the site I mentioned only goes up as far as 1947!   I will keep my eyes open when I am looking at different site.  Anna   :)

Was the child in 1913 also b. in Jamaica?

I would start with looking at where she was living at the earliest you have information on her, and who else was around at that time. e.g. who registered the births of her children, where was she living, who else by the same name was in that area, whether her children might have been given family names, etc.
