Maria LOFTY

Hi All,

I have another one. I'm looking for information on the parents of Maria Lofty. Maria married Jude Kemp on 6 Apr 1833 in Wartling, Sussex. I think she was baptised on 24 Jun 1809 in Ticehurst, Sussex and her parent are John Lofty and Margaret Baker. I have no information on John or Margaret. I'm not sure if they are from Ticehurst, Wartling or elsewhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

LOFTY is not a surname that appears in the 1801 or 1811 Census; but BAKER appears in both on numerous occasions.

Can I ask why you think Maria was baptised on that date at Ticehurst?

I ask because looking through the Ticehurst records there are no Lofty baptisms and the only Maria I could find was

Maria Lofty
born on 24 June 1802
baptised at Hooe on 10 October 1802
to John Lofty and Margaret of Hooe

I can't find a marriage for John and Margaret in Sussex, not far from the Sussex/Kent border so they could have married in Kent??

Do you have any record of Jude and Maria after they married, I can't find them in Sussex during any census records?

Hi Kerry,

The reason I thought see was baptised in Ticehurst is from other trees on the net. I guess this is why people tell you not to take that as gospel. I do recall seeing her death certificate (which I can't find at the moment) which gives her mother as Margaret Baker.

They came to Australia in 1839. The group consisted of Jude and Maria, their 4 year old son George, a daughter Peggy who was born on the ship, a Sarah Lofty who I think was Maria's daughter born out of wedlock and also Maria's Mother Margaret.

Do you have any Oz census for them, I was going to check Maria's age to see whether through census returns it is nearer 1802 or 1809.

Found baptism for Sarah

Sarah Margaret Lofty baptised at Wartling on 26 January 1834 to Maria Lofty.  I am wondering as this is nearly a year after Maria married Jude whether Sarah was born before 1833??  Otherwise why baptise daughter in maide name??
