Enfield from 1916
« on: Wednesday 19 January 11 10:00 GMT (UK) »
My mother was born 30 Apr 1916, I assume at her parents home at 32 Millais Road. Her father's occupation was Carpenter at a Gun Factory.
Mum's parents were Charles William Warren and Jane Tookey, they married at , Christ Church, Chase Side, Enfield 23 September 1903 - and both gave their address as 10 Lynn Street, Enfield. He was 26 and a Carpenter (Journeyman) and she was 24. Jane died in 1925 (still at Millais Road) Charles is now described as a Trade Union Organiser, and then he remarries 3 years later on 25 Feb 1928 - he is now a Pianoforte Maker and Tuner - still at 32 Millais Road, and his new wife is Ruth Hilda Jenkins, aged 43, a spinster and Grocer's Assistant . They marry at the Congregational Church, George Spicer Memorial, Main Ave, Bush Hill Park.

What I am interested in is what were times like then - what were people's lives like and what was Enfield like? It has only struck me recently that it was during WWI - no idea why I never registered that before. I know very little about my mother's early life - I know she went into service as a Parlour Maid at age 14. How did girls get these jobs? And later she was Matron in a Boy's School. She trained as a Nurse at St Thomas Hospital, and served in WW2 as a QAIMNS, going to North Africa, Italy, etc. I recently got her medals, which she had never collected as she left England before they were issued. She had a child that was adopted in about 1944/45, and after that worked as a District Nurse around Dulwich and the Elephant and castle for a Miss Pond. She emigrated to NZ in 1949.

Will be very grateful for any assistance - suggested reading matter (I have read Sisters in Arms) or anything else.
Regards
Jan

This gives you a flavour

If you go to your local library they'll have a selection of books on social history covering the period you want.  If they don't have them, they should be able to get some from another library.

Hi Jan, I live in the Enfield area, and know very well the 2 churches that you mention in your post, I have many books on the local history of Enfield and surrounding districts, if you wish any info just PM me, so as not to bulk out your thread!

The Gun Factory mentioned was the Royal Small Arms Factory in Ordnance Road, Enfield Highway, famous for the Lee-Enfield 303 Rifle.

The whole area of that side of Enfield was a mass of Greenhouses, and small farms.
