I can't find Ada with anyone meaningful, apart from a possible in 1861 where she's with Mills uncle and aunt, the uncle being an upholsterer; same profession as James - I'll re-find the refs in a mo.  RG9 51 82 41.

I'm wondering if James and Elizabeth died between 1854 and the 1861 Census, and Ada was with the uncle and aunt, then in 1871 was in an orphanage in St James & Paul, Clifton, Gloucestershire, RG10 2550 43 5; and back to London as a servant in 1881, RG11 54 75 11.

I found a possible for Elizabeth and William baptising a son Samuel:

St Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex
22nd September 1839
Samuel son of William & Elizabeth HOSKINS of D'Oyley Street, occupation baker

There is an 1851 Census possible:

HO107 1472 283 46
William HOSKINS Head 36 Laundry Man b Devon Uff
Elizabeth Wife 36 b Dorset Dorchester
Samuel Son 11 b Middx Chelsea
Ann Dau 7
Maria Dau 5
Emily Dau 3mths
Amelia Dau 3mths  Children all born Middx Chelsea
Plus 2 servants

or there's an Elizabeth and William in Kennington, Lambeth, William a police officer, HO107 1573, which might make more sense seeing as Elizabeth married James Mills there.... Added: scrap that one, she's 27, so too young to have married in 1838  ::)

That's why I wanted to know if James had actually signed Ada's marriage cert; if he had died then he could not have been a witness to the marriage  ;)

I've looked at that one several times but dident see how Wm may have  got from a Baker to a Police Officer.
