WW1 Nurses Uniform - but whose?? Louisa Elizabeth Rose Clarke
« on: Thursday 20 January 11 07:17 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone
I am trying to find out to which hospital or organisation this nurses uniform belongs to?? Her name is Louisa Elizabeth Rose Clarke born 1896 Tipton, Staffordshire. She married Rowland Williams Dec Q 1915 Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales. She worked as a nurse in Anglesey & Bognar before and after her marriage and also nursed the troops in WW1 France/Belgium at Wimereux & Wimille.
I have contacted the British Red Cross, this uniform is not one of theirs and her name is not listed as one of their nurses.
I have a thread on Anglesey (Wales) for her husband Rowland Williams, click on this link.. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=508133.new#new
Kind regards
Bendywendy

I have now contacted both British Red Cross and the Army Medical Museum, both cannot find any entry for her being a nurse with them, also the uniform cannot be identified...but it is possible it was some sort of religious order encompassing nursing in Wales OR a typical Welsh nursing uniform in the area of Anglesey. It might be navy blue and white /  black and white / grey and white, the photograph is a copy from an original.

I have now been directed to the Imperial War Museum to ask if they can identify it, will post back on here their reply.

I was trying to work out if that was a blotch on her collar or a small butterfly brooch! Enlarged the pic and it still looked like a butterfly.

I too think it is also like a butterfly, the British Red Cross enhanced the pic and said it was mark on the photo, but I don't agree with that theory, afterall the  pic is a copy not the original.

Lyn MacDonald . It is contains personal experiences of nurses during WW1

Yes still looks like a butterfly to me as well Tony!!

PM Scarletwoman, will await her response.
Also found her website BRITISH MILITARY NURSES FROM 1875  http://www.scarletfinders.co.uk/
has fascinating info and at last from the info there I have found the Nursing Registers on National Archives...
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/civilian-nurses.htm
scroll downwards to find the Ref No's to search on NA site.

Papers of the General Nursing Council covering nursing registration overseas. 1911-1984 .. Series DT 43
 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=4939&CATLN=3&FullDetails=True

CHARTERS: British Red Cross Society: Charter of Incorporation and Supplemental Charter....Division within HO  General registers, registered papers, warrant and entry books and correspondence; and records of General and E Departments, and wartime departments (First World War) ... Piece reference HO 45/20838
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATLN=6&CATID=5959140&SearchInit=4&SearchType=6&CATREF=HO+45/20838

On one drawback with the registers, one has to go view them at the NA's and I live a long way from London. ???
