Early Dublin car owners circa 1881 ??
« on: Thursday 20 January 11 21:25 GMT (UK) »
On the marriage record for my great great grand parents ( Richard Hanlon and Mary Dowling 7 Aug 1881 Dublin) , both their fathers occupations are listed as Car drivers. The 1901 and 1911 show that the family were in the 'car proprietary' business.

I am trying to find out more about the introduction of cars in ireland - from what I have found through general googling, the first cars in ireland and England were not until at least the 1890's. So not sure what else Car driver could refer to??

This is the only arm of my tree that was not living in complete tragic poverty at this time so am excited to try and find more about this . any ideas ?

cheers

barbara

It was probably horse drawn carriages or trams.

agreed - 'cars' were horse-drawn and were cabbie's of the day

Early 1900's in Ireland.....

Very few motor-cars... 1st one imported into Ireland in 1899 by a Dublin doctor
1904 there were 38 cars in Dublin
Only the very rich could afford cars, they cost around £400

Car owners may just  be horse drawn cars,or carts,as
this is how my grandfather describes himself in the 1901
census.

I have found a few car drivers as well; when I went back through their history many began as coachmen etc. which would imply they were driving carriages
I have a photo some where of Bray Station about 120 years ago with a line of horse drawn cabs outside but I can't seem to find it - this is Sutton in the UK in the 1880s approx from a postcard
