Obituary 1872 Whitehaven
« on: Saturday 22 January 11 12:49 GMT (UK) »
Hoping that some kind soul will be able to help me find a possible
obituary for John Doran who died on 26th October 1872 at Quay
Street Whitehaven. On his death cert. his occupation was given as
Master Mariner, and therefore I am hoping his passing was considered
'news-worthy'. I would dearly love to see the Whitehaven news archives
for this era, but sadly live 100's of miles away. I am hoping that if an
obit. can be found, it may provide me with clues as to the life of my 2x gt.
grandfather, as sadly to date I have hit a brickwall on all fronts, despite
extensive research.
Any help / suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi Alyson.Don't know if you've already got this but here's the address and email for the Whitehaven records office- (They have the Whitehaven news archives)
whitehaven.record.office @ cumbria.gov.uk
Address-Cumbria record office-local studies
Library Scotch st Whitehaven Cumbria Ca28 7nl
Telephone 01946 506420
Unfortunately, they don't have an archivist but will do a search for a small fee.
Hope this helps. Best wishes Julie

Thanks for your help Julie,
I did wonder if the microfiche were available maybe in local libraries
or family history groups where some one would'nt mind having a look
for me. Of course if some one was visiting Whitehaven RO I would be
very grateful.

Hi
If he was a Master mariner it will be worth trying to find details of his career.  Kew Archives hold various things and Lloyds Captains Registers may have him on
http://www.history.ac.uk/gh/capintro.htm
My ancestor only had a steam boat on the Tees but I found quite a lot about the boats he served on and who owned them

The Whitehaven Records Office has microfilm copies of the Whitehaven News (or Cumberland Pacquet) for that era, as last year I was able to obtain a copy of an 1868 newspaper report of a shipwreck of an ancestor.

As you have an exact date of death of death, it's certainly worth the price of an e-mail to see if they can do anything for you.
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Thanks Silligen ...... we have searched at the Guild Hall Library, but
unfortunately we were not so lucky as yourself. There were a couple of possibles but none that we can verify. Also tried all the usual online
reference sites, again possibles but just need another piece of the
jigsaw to go further.
I think the Whitehaven News may hopefully hold the clues to my search
Geoff-e, certainly worth an e-mail as you say ......... cross my fingers they
might not charge me as I have exact date of death.
Thanks to you both for your interest.
I am hoping to visit Whitehaven RO this year if all else fails! ....... need to
take my sleeping bag me thinks!!
