Grand Parents - Le Clercq
« on: Saturday 22 January 11 20:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I  am at a loss to find any info on my maternal Great Grandparents. She was Luce Louisa Augustine Le Clercq. Born in Sortice France. in 1856. She married Joshua Wood in Westminster London in 1876. On th marriage certificate her father is listed as Dominique Le Clercq. a draper.
In 1881 she was a House caretaker at a house in Harley st London .Her husband was working at a house in Gloucestershire , I have lots of info on him.
Any help or suggestions appreciated. Iwould like to know whether Luce had brothers,  sisters etc and who her mother was,
Thank you.

Are you sure she was born in "Sortice"?

Hi

I have put the name "Sortrice" and tried "Sorstrice" into Mappy here in France - nothing comes up.
I think you might have misread the name.

I found the census and it is very difficult to read.... Could you post a copy of the marriage cert so we can have a look?

My husband has a subscription to a French genealogy site.  I did a general search for Le ClercQ and although I could not find (at least not yet!) a tree for a Luce marrying a Joshua Wood, all the Le Clercq given seem to come from the North of France - Picardie, Nord Pas de Calais.

I tried with Le Clerc (without the "q") and no luck there either!! There are some Luce Le Clercs but not the right husband.

Le Clercq (spelt with a "Q") could be a Jersey name..........................

Who were the witnesses at her marriage? She may have had other family members who came to London.

It's not usual to give birthplace on marriage certificates - can you clarify which record you have that place name from and if possible give (excerpt only not the full page) an image of the word? (I checked 1881 and 1901 and she's only listed as b. "France" there).

Also the person writing the place-name down might not have known the proper spelling and just made his best guess.

Hi
Thanks for all the interest and help. This below is gleaned from the 1891 census,
Luce Wood
Age: 35
Estimated birth year: abt 1856
Relation: Wife
Spouse's name:Joshua Wood
Gender: Female
Where born: Sorstice, France

On her marriage certificate  theres no indication of relatives at the wedding except her father.
I thought thats where i read her birthplace but must havehad a senior moment as its not on there
Thank you

Hi Manchester Rambler
thanks for the post. It is very difficult to read but I still interpret it as Sortice. I have a picture of her and remember my mum telling me her grandmother was french. Its one of those timesw
