Hi Norrie,

I am currently researching my family history and came across a burial/death record for Elisabeth Millar spouse of William Adamson (Milton of Balgonie).

Can you please check your records and see if you have an image of the headstone, should be in the st drostans old churchyard cemetery (if it helps the death record states 12 yds from southside and 4 yds from eastside.) she was interred 16th October 1805.

Any help is much appreciated.

Best Regards,

Martin

Hi Norrie,

Thank you very much for your help.

The information as I have it is as follows:

William Adamson
b. 9 Nov 1771 (Ceres)
m. Christian Young (4 January 1794)
m. Elisabeth Millar (1 November 1800)
d. Not sure - to tie in with the 1843 death he would have had to be born 1778 (there is a william adamson born 1778 in St Monace - how would I go about finding out which william I am looking for?)

Christian Young
b. 4 August 1775 (Largo)
m. William Adamson (4 January 1794)
d. 2 November 1800 (Ceres) Only 25 years old!

Elizabeth Millar (Elisabeth)
b. 5 February 1785 (Kennoway)
m. William Adamson (1 November 1800)
d. 16 October 1805 (Markinch) Only 20 years old!

Children

Catharine Adamson
b. 25 March 1803 (Markinch)
m. Never married, although had 5 Children (3 of which to my 4th Great Grandfather - William Forsyth 1790 - 1848).
d. 5 January 1871 (Markinch)

Didn't know anything about david until now.

Not sure if william married both christian and elizabeth or if this is a cross with more than one william adamson, how do you find out when the census wasn't recorded until 1841?

Best Regards,

Martin

Not sure if william married both christian and elizabeth or if this is a cross with more than one william adamson, how do you find out when the census wasn't recorded until 1841

the problem is I can't find a William Adamson in the 1841 census in Markinch
there one  was buried in Markinch in 1843 stating he was from Milton
as was Elizabeth Millar who died in 1805

William & Elizabeth
their children Kathrine born 1803 is called after Elisabeths  mother Kathrine Miles
so you would assume that David born 1805 is called after Williams father
I don't think there is any connection between the 2 Williams
William Adamson born 9.11.1771 Ceres parents George Adamson & Barbara Swan
When you look at his childrens names there are no George or Barbara
so I would not pick these as his parents

William Adamson born 1.11.1778 St Monance parents James Adamson & Elspeth Duncan
if it was this William then he must have only been 16 when he married Christian Young in 1794
again you say Christian Young died 2.11.1800 Ceres but you also say he married
Elizabeth Millar 1.11.1800, something wrong Christian was not dead yet.

William Adamson born 9.11.1771 Ceres parents George Adamson & Barbara Swan
When you look at his childrens names there are no George or Barbara
so I would not pick these as his parents

I would expect Williams father to be called DAVID after his first son
when you do a family search for William Adamson  born 1776 to17782 in fife
with a father called David
name: William Adamson
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 21 Jan 1781
baptism/christening place: BEATH,FIFE,SCOTLAND
birth date: 15 Jan 1781
father's name: David Adamson
mother's name: Betty Brown
Remember the death for William 1843 Milton other than been
from Markinch Burials I don't know if its him

Catharine Adamson
b. 25 March 1803 (Markinch)
m. Never married, although had 5 Children (3 of which to my 4th Great Grandfather - William Forsyth 1790 - 1848).
d. 5 January 1871 (Markinch

1851 Census/  Place: Markinch -Fife Enumeration District: 11
Civil Parish: Markinch Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Milton Of Balgonie
Folio: 0 Page: 12 Schedule: 48
Address: Milton Of Balgonie

Was looking for info on parents and or siblings of Great Great Grandfather Andrew Galloway (died Lochgelly 19 Dec 1897 80yrs old) On death certificate, father Thomas Galloway coalminer and mother Isabella Welsh. In all census records birthplace is Markinch. If 80 when died would make birth year 1817. Tho' parish record has that as when baptised and born as your findings in 1815! Maybe he was as confused as I about his birth!

If your and my Andrew are the same (and not Thornton one!) he was married to a Janet Christie and there's another mystery there! On death cert says married to Janet Christie and 'Previously to 'blank' Christie'.
In court case involving Andrew and Janet, she states that she and Andrew married 14/08/1848, (have seen record), but he already had 3 children. She then had 13! I have found an earlier record of a marriage in Nov 1840 between an Andrew Galloway, but it is also to a Janet Christie! Both Auchterderran Parish records.

When found parish record pre 1855 it lists children of Andrew and Janet between 1841 and 1854 but no mention of two different Janets!
Tho' I noticed 3 children were born between 1841 and 1846 which would be the 3 mentioned in newspaper report of case?
Don't know if with your experience you might have some ideas about a solution to this 'mystery'
trying to find more about Janet (Died 1911 aged 88 in Cowdenbeath),father Robert a bottle blower but no name for her mother...
Did she have a sister that Andrew may have married before, a coincidence they had same name or something else? The search continues!

Thanks anyway for your help!
Christine

Hiya,
Am looking for a Margaret Philp who was married to a Michael Philp. I see in Scotland's People there was a death for a Margaret Philp 23rd April, 1814, in Markinch...where I think her mother's  people had lived...though the Philps actually had lived in St Andrews & St Leonards..
I may be totally off beam, & barking up the wrong tree...but am wondering if you could check it out for me please...& see if the headstone can clarify anything here?!
Thanks lots...& cheers,
Jesszgran
