Harry Freeman lived at Rose Bush Court, Parkhill Rd- died 1984
« on: Sunday 23 January 11 22:32 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me to solve a mystery please.

Harry Freeman died in May 1984 age 76.  He lived at number 13, Rose Bush Court, Parkhill Road, Hampstead, London from 1969 until he died in 1984.

I need to learn more about Harry.  It is 26 years since he died, but perhaps he was a friend of your parents, or grandparents, or perhaps a neighbour.  Perhaps he drank in your local pub...

He was buried at Bushey Cemetery by the United Synagogue after they search in vein to find some family. Harry was a bachelor.  He was Jewish, but I don't think he was very religious.

Harry left Liverpool where he was born in 1907 as Harry Freedman.  He enjoyed ballroom dancing & I'm told he often went to afternoon Tea Dances with a neighbour - Mrs Eva Schrier who also lived at Rose Bush Court until Eva died in the mid 1990's.

I would love to hear from any person who remembers Harry, or would be able to tell me the venue where Tea Dances would likely be held in the 1970's - 1980's in the Parkhill Road area.

I would also like to know where Harry lived before he moved into Rose Bush Court when the complex opened in 1969.  I am trying to trace the 17 year gap in his life from when he left Liverpool, which was sometime in the mid 1950's.

Thank you

Hi

I don't know if they still happen but .........

Royal Opera House
Covent Garden
Waldorf
Finsbury Town Hall
Spitalfields Market (used to)

How about one of the (local-ish) synagogues?
They may know or put one on?
Do you anything about whether he kept his faith?
One of the synagogues may actually remember him?

Regards
Ray

Thanks Ray, I'll check out these suggested venues.

I've checked the local synagogues & he is not known to them.  I don't think Harry did keep his faith.  Rose Bush Court is managed by SP Housing Ass, but owned by The Humanist Ass.  I don't know if that is significant or not. SP Housing  only keep their records for 3 years & there is no record of him being a member of the British Human Ass, but that might just mean no records have been found.

Thank you again

Hi

Is it worth seeing who reported his death?
Have you got his DeathCert? What does it say?

If he is in Bushey then I would have thought he was known to a synagogue.
Is it worth asking UnSyn who informed them?

A tea dance could have been held anywhere. My mum used to attend them at the local leisure centre, working mens club and sometimes in a school hall.

Have you got the electoral roll info for the few years before he died to find if anyone else was living at the same address?

He lived alone Carol.

His flat at Rose Bush Court was a single occupancy flat & he was there from 1969 when the complex opened.

I'm trying to trace his previous address, but there were so many Harry Freeman's living in London. So it's a needle in a hay stack without any further info.

Yes, I have his DC. The informant was a member of the hospital staff.  He was buried 10 days after he died after failing to find any family.  He was buried at Bushey in a stone-less grave by the UN.  Mrs Eva Schrier & the warden of Rose Bush Court, attended his funeral.  He disappeared from Liverpool in the mid 1950's & his family never knew where he went.  His siblings had died before him, but he did have nephews & nieces in Liverpool & Australia, but they never knew where he had gone & had not seen him since they were small children.

I'm 250 miles from London & don't have access to London's electoral rolls.  I would need to go to the local library, to where he lived & look at the electoral rolls for Harry Freeman pre 1969 & then post 1969, to see who had moved from their previous address.  I could be there for weeks.  But if I could find his previous address he might have lived with somebody who perhaps had died, or neighbours might be able to give me info about him.
