1861 Esher Surrey Census
« on: Monday 24 January 11 09:35 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone will be able to help me but is there any of the 1861 Esher Surrey Census missing... I am searching for people I know to be living in Catos Hill and Hare Lane but cannot find either listed on the Census on Ancestry or Find my Past ....

I'm guessing I'm missing them somehow but thought I would ask before going throught it all again.

If it helps the names I am looking for are Blatch & Sparks

Thanks in advance for any advice given

Mm it don't mention anything on there regarding Surrey but can't find either of those two roads on the census so i'm guessing it has to be lost or missing

Thanks for taking the time to answer tho   :)

If you give us names and dates of birth, maybe we can help?

Not much to go on so far!!  ;)

In the 1861 census, the only streets in Esher were:
High Street
London Street
Moore Place
West End
and 1 house in Portsmouth Road.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Thats what I found too but I know the streets existed in 1851 as I have the census for that ......

The name i'm after is Thomas Blatch should be in Catos Hill born 1775 he died in 1862 and Cornelius Sparks I thought I would find him living in Hare Lane.

I had trouble with this a few years back but thought I would start searching again as I thought maybe it hadn't all been copied.

I'l have to phone Surrey Records Office and see if they know anything about any of it missing

Thanks for your time

Hi

Ypur Archives census street index picks up both Catos Hill and Hare Lane on the 1851 and 1871 census but not on the 1861 census

http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=Place:Kingston_Registration_District,_1861_Census_Street_Index_C-F

http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=Place:Kingston_Registration_District,_1861_Census_Street_Index_G-I

There are no known missing enumeration district issues for Surrey in 1861 (you would expect that to be shown on the Your Archives street index)

However that is whole enumeration districts. Less easy to spot on censuses is missing households, parts of streets, small lanes etc. where the enumerator forgot to walk and hand out the household schedules (or they were missed out when the areas the enumerators were to cover were first mapped out) or the enumerator 'lost' some household schedules before copying them into the census enumerator's book.....

London Street is actually Hampton, not Esher and has been wrongly indexed on FindMyPast.  ::)

Some of the original images are in a very poor condition, so I wouldn't be surprised if most of Esher is missing.

E.G. RG09, Piece 457, Folio 4, Pages 1 & 2

RG09, Piece 457, Folio 3, Pages 1 & 2 appear to be missing. (From page 3, previous image jumps to page 0 vi)

This last summary declares 190 schedules, 181 inhabited houses, and a total of 982 persons.
But there are only 2 pages?!?!

Folio 4 shows 2 pages, and then jumps to Folio 5 page 1 - i.e. no summary.
Folio 6 is missing pages 1 and 2 and summary.
Folio 7 is missing pages 1, 2, 3 and 4 and summary.
Folio 8 is missing pages 1 to 6!
Folio 9 is missing pages 1 to 8.
Folio 10 is missing pages 1 to 10.
Folio 11 starts at page 13
Folio 12 starts at page 15.
Folio 13 starts at page 17.

(I am assuming that each folio starts at page 1?)

Looks like a right mess!
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

If you ever manage to find out what happened to those images and in particular obtain a copy then I'd love to hear about it. Like you I've been after the one for Thomas William Blatch but so far I've had no luck. Mind you, I don't even have his death certificate from the following year so it's not quite the final piece of the jigsaw for me.
