Marriage of John Hodgson abt 1828
« on: Monday 24 January 11 14:39 GMT (UK) »
I have received some very useful help in the past, and have been trying to find information on my own, but have come unstuck again, could somebody help please?. I will try to explain as easy as I can.
I don't know how or where to look for a marriage of a JOHN HODGSON abt 1828 or before, I know he was born in Yorkshire abt 1806, and his wife's christian name was ANNE b. abt 1806, she originated from Ireland. Their 1st born, was born in Ireland  in 1828, her name was Ann Hodgson. (they had a further 3 children born in Ireland) I found this information on the 1841 Census, while I was investigating their son James Hodgson b.1835/6, although he says his birth place was in Kendal Westmorland on other census's, I have found him on the 1881 census, to which it says he was born at sea. I assume, Kendal was where they docked and registered his birth.
As I say, I would now like to go back further and try to find the Marriage of John Hodgson to Anne? about 1828 or before.

Thank you, t mo for your kind information you submitted to me. I think the 1st John Hodgson  b. 16th june 1799 is a probable match that I'm looking for. I,m probably asking too much of you, but can you tell where John and Anne was listed as place of birth?.

Hi,

I'm a bit confused by your post. If this is the right family in 1841  HO107/1163/1  f.28  p.12  and 1851  HO107/2442  f.61  p.29  John gives his birthplace as Westmoreland and Kendal, Westmoreland. Why do you think he was born in Yorkshire?

I found this marriage on the IGI,

John HODGSON
Ann HILTON
22 Oct 1823   Kendal, Westmorland

which fits the dates but doesn't explain why the first children were born in Ireland.

If this is their daughter's christening on the IGI,

Mary HODGSON
Birth:  24 Oct 1840
Christening:  11 Apr 1841   Kendal, Westmorland
Father:  John HODGSON
Mother:  Ann

then this seems to be her birth reg. getting this cert. would confirm her mother's maiden name :)

Mary HODGSON    DecQ 1840     Kendal    25  457

Regards,
Daisy

Hi Daisy,
Thank you for your last post. The information that John Hodgson was born in Yorkshire, came from T. Mo's post on 25th Jan, and by the 1841 Census.

I take it the 1st children of John Hodgson and his wife Ann were born in Ireland because Anne was born in Ireland, going by the 1841 Census, and going by the 1881 Census their son James (the main purpose of my interest), was born in 1835 and at sea, but was registered when and where they docked i.e. kendal Westmorland
Once again, thank you for any input you have entered in the past, and any in the future you are able to add.

Hi,

Sorry I'm still confused :-[

In your original post you say 'I know he was born in Yorkshire abt 1806' which is why I think t mo found a HODGSON birth and marriage in Yorkshire, but there are many John HODGSONs in England.

In the 1841 census I can't see where it shows that John was born in Yorkshire although ther is a word I can't decipher, is this the right family?

1841  HO107/1163/1  Kendal
Captain French Lane

HODGSON
John        35    Police Constable ?????    Y
Ann         35                                     I
Ann         13    Worsted Spinner           I
John        11    Card Setter                  I
Samuel      9    Card Setter                  I
Jane         7                                      I
James       5                                      I
Alexander  3                                      I
Mary         6mo                                 Y

For the question 'Where born'  Y is a yes to  'Whether born in same County'  so indicating he was born in Westmoreland and the I is in response to 'Whether born in Scotland, Ireland or Foreign parts'  so born in Ireland.

My apologies if this is not the right family.

Regards,
Daisy
