Do you mean 1990? - or 1890?

If it was reported in the army births returns then you would be able to order a certificate from the UK authorities.

Assuming it's not a living person you can post the name here and we will take a look for you.

Hi ShaunJ many thanks for the info, although I would like to find out who james father & Mother were, I have an elusive James Francis Gadney who was born 1871 circa and is suposedly a child death by speculation, I do hope I am not taking to much time on this subject.

Regards Willoughbyjames

James Francis Gadney was born in 1873.

There are not many James Gadneys around so the one that died in Malta in 1891 could well be him. It's not unusual for ages to mis-stated by a year or two in army records.

The death certificate might tell you his regiment/battalion, and you might then be able to find him in the muster rolls at TNA.

The ref in the GRO army death indices is 1891 Page 52.

There are a number of submitted trees on Ancestry that show James Francis Gadney as the father of a Bernard Thomas Gadney born 1909, but this not right. His parents were Thomas and Jane Gadney

Shaun once again many thanks, after reading your coments, I was unable to get any further forward, I must admit that I had great difficulty in following the trail of James F Gadney in malta, if there is a way in which to get on further can you kindly advise,

Kind Regards Willoughbyjames.

We don't know for sure that it was James F Gadney that died in Malta in 1891, but the James Gadney death reported by the army could well be him.

I am not sure how you could take it further without spending some money to obtain the death certificate which might give some helpful information to enable you to do further research. With the information I have given you, you should be able to order the certificate online for £9.25 or whatever it costs these days.

(Select Overseas Deaths)

The army personnel record will have been destroyed after 20 years so it could be a hard slog to nail this one down. If you can determine his army unit then you may be able to trace him in muster rolls. I guess you would be looking for that middle name or initial to settle it ( or a mention of Alfred on the death certificate !)
