Keeping up with my Jones's..a challenge!
« on: Tuesday 25 January 11 07:51 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I am wondering if a fresh pair of eyes may be able to help me discover where the new offspring of my G G Grandfather may have appeared from.

This is what I know already

Stephen Jones married Catherine Ashton in 1896 Pontypridd.

In 1901 they are in Mountain Ash, with my G Grandfather Thomas Edward (1898-) and there other child Martha Jane Jones (1899-1903).

In 1911 they are with the following children at 56 Eleanor Street, Tonypandy

Thomas Edward (1898-)

May (also known as Ada May) (1902-)

Stephen John (1903-)

Katie Mildred (1905-1915)

After the census in 1911 they also had daughter Ethel I Jones.

In 1915 Catherine Jones nee Ashton died and was buried with her children Martha and Katie.

In 1922 Stephen is still showing as residing at 56 Eleanor Street.

In 1936 Stephen died and was buried with his wife and children.

I have a copy of the obituary in the paper and it states the mourners were:

Sons;
Thomas (my G Grandfather),
Jack and Harry - I can find no birth for these to an Ashton post 1911
Stephen J is not there

Sons-in-Law;
D J Thornton-(married Ada May in 1923)
G S Morgan- found a marriage for a Glyn S Morgan to an Edith D Jones, but can find no birth to an ashton.
B Stinton-married Ethel I Jones in 1931 (name was actually Albert think he used Bert)

Daughters;
Mrs M Thornton,
Mrs E Morgan,
Mrs B Stinton (think she has used Mrs Bert Stinton)

So to summarise, I have a Jack, Harry and Edith D, all named as Stephen's Children, none showing on 1911 census, can find no births between 1911 and 1915 when catherine Died...

Also, My Grandfather Thomas John had two children, which were not at the funeral.
His Wife Mary Maria died in 1925, so he may have remarried and had more, but so far haven't been able to prove that...however there was listed as Grandchildren present at the funeral Margaret Jones, Melville Jones, Ronald Jones....and surprise surprise I can't find who there parents are....

Anyone fancy tackling this one??

any help would be greatly appreciated,

Kind Thanks

Colleen

It may be of no help at all for you to know that a mysterious child appeared on the 1901 census living with my great grandfather and his parents and listed as "adopted". This child turned out to be a spare child from a family a bit further up the street who had fallen on hard times and were being helped out by their neighbours. This child had disappeared back to his real family by 1911. Perhaps something similar was going on with your ancestors?

Hello Colleen

Perhaps Jack was actually Stephen John born 1903?

Kind Regards

Thanks for the replies,

I never thought of that...but just a few moments ago I did find a Justinian H and a Henry G born to mothers maiden name Ashton in 1912 and 1914 respectively.

I can find nothing on Justinian which with such a unique first name I would have thought I would....perhaps he is Jack.

It is giving me a headache trying to figure it all out  :-\

Regards

Colleen

I couldn't find Registrations of births for many of my Welsh side, but thankfully the mystery was solved by the 1911 census, when both their names were listed .

I don't know if this applies to a lot of Welsh familes, but all the children were referred to by their middle names during their life time and I would never have found their births.

The name Justinian is unique, the one in my family originated in Cornwall.

This is a long shot Colleen.

When typing the above something rang a bell about my Justinian  Hosken/Hoskings living in Wales in 1911 :-\  looks like Blaenaw Terrace.

His name being very unusual I have checked back to find the family in Ystradyfodwg in 1901,  this is not far from Tonypandy where your family are from. Possibly it's a family name handed down as his father was also called Justinian.

Can you find a connection with Justinian Kavern Hosken/Hoskings1862 Cornwall or wife Elizabeth Edwards Trembath 1863 Cornwall?
Their children:
SON: William J 1886 married  Ann Bosanko  in 1902 Bridgend and had children: Arther N F A 1901 Cardiff, Grace Ann 1902 Maestag. ...I am not too sure these are both his children

Justinian 1888 Cornwall and Grace W 1890 Cornwall were still single in 1911.

Hello Ambers,

I have investigated the Justinian Hoskings line, and he married a Jones but not someone I can tie up to my tree.

Thanks for all your help,

Colleen
