There seems to be a lot of Elizabeths, Francis and Christianas in both the Swales and Stephenson families. Unpicking it all is going to be interesting.

Hi Stevie,  Elizabeth Stephenson 1814 Yarm was my 3rd great aunt. She was the daughter of Edward Stephenson  and and Mary Gill.  She was baptised at Hutton Rudby in 1814.  She married Francis Swales in 1833 at Stockton.  Francis was born  1814 Aycliffe the son of Francis Swales 1783 and Christiana Stephenson 1777 Whitby.  There is some contention who Christiana was, however I believe this is her.

That's great Val. Thanks for your help. During my research on ancestry.com I have found prison records for a Francis Swales. In 1858 he is imprisoned in York for aiding a Margaret Stephenson to commit bigamy. Have you any knowledge of this and could it be Elizabeth Stephensons Francis? Also in 1848 a 33 year old Francis Swales, a sedgefield potter, is sentenced to 2 months in Durham gaol for an assault. Worse still, a Francis Swales appears in York in 1851 charged with bestiality. There are no further details attached to these records and I'm hoping 1851s Francis is unrelated.

This Francis was 25.  Margaret 18, and she is the one who committed bigamy by marrying Francis!  According to newspaper

The Leeds Intelligencer and Yorkshire General Advertiser.
