Samuel Mayor agent for Honourable Corporation of Trinity House
« on: Tuesday 25 January 11 17:32 GMT (UK) »
Samuel Mayor was born in Harwich around 1808, I haven't found his baptism, but his father,Captain Samuel was the agent for the honourarable Corporation of the Trinity House for the port of Harwich married I believe to a Mary(maiden name unknown) who died in Colchester in 1837.
The Ipswich Journal Saturday, January 28, 1837

Died, Mrs Mayor, wife of Mr. Samuel Mayor, agent to Trinity Board at Harwich.

Samuel born 1808, Samuel's son married Mary Elizabeth Durrant also of Harwich I think, sometime before 1836 because that's when their first born son James Samuel Mayor was born.

So can anyone help with Samuel's birth around 1808 and his marriage before 1836 please?

Samuel went on to follow his father's footsteps in Harwich, Mistley, Blyth and Grimsby.

Thanks t mo,

Yes that's how I know of James Samuel and his Samuel's wife as Mary Elizabeth Durant/durrant. Following the same rule, as first son being named after his grandfathers that would mean as I know already that James Mayor's grandfathers were Samuel Mayor and James Durrant/Durant.

I have a feeling the Durrant's were butchers in Harwich at the time, certainly a James Durrant and Samuel Mayor were eligible to vote in Harwich elections:

In the Ipswich Journal of 2nd January 1836, James Durrant is a butcher a Conservative, and Samuel Mayor, the Trinity Agent, was a Whig. Does anyone know anything about the role of the Trinity House men in Harwich at the time. Samuel Mayor, father of the above Samuel seems to have been Harwich since 1808.

Anyone able to do the look up or is that a different board?

Tom

www.trinityhouse.co.uk/about_us/history/genealogy  it gives you help in where to go for records and such but it looks like it,s all well spread and they lost a lot of personnel records due to fire so it says also trinity house harwich is the main headquarters for the organisation .

Hi t mo

Yes that's what I found about the Trinity House records, so it looks like a trip there sometime, which makes a good excuse for a visit to the capital. I notice on the same website that they also have records in Hull & Newcastle, so I think a letter to Hull to see if they have the records for Harwich there, and then the Guildhall. I seem to remember a "Who do you think you are" researcher with a celebrity looking into the same records, only they were allowed to look at the original documents, as opposed to us plebs who have to be content with microfilm! Ho Hum!

It looks like Samuel was certainly living in the Parish of St Nicholas as his son was baptised there in 1837. His father, also Samuel, was also a resident of the same parish, his second wife, Mrs. Ann Till, who was then married to husband John Till, was in the same parish as John was a beadle of the said church. It looks like that the Mayor family were non-conformist, I wonder if it was true of the Durrant family?

Anyway thanks for your help and I will puzzle onwards.

That's pretty good, so he was a butcher, that was a good guess. That 's smashing, lots to work with there.

Thanks very much.
