I had to laugh at the 1891 census for Kate, it has place of birth as On the High seas.

Kate Oceania Carten 28 Spinster. 196 Stockwell Road. Father John Carter (deceased)

Witnesses were W. J. Jones? & ? Ellis.

Thanks again.  An Emma ELLIS was Kate's maternal aunt.  Shame with witnesses you never know for sure.

It would be quite a cool answer to the often asked question 'Were you born near here?'....'No, on the High Seas actually!'  :)
