Greenhalgh confectioners Manchester
« on: Thursday 27 January 11 15:20 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone remember the Greenhalgh confectioners/bakers in the Ancoats?Collyhurst district of Manchester?  The period was around the 1920's and the owners names were Edward and Eliza.  They had a number of children however I only know two of their names....Florence and Edwin (or Edward).  Florence married my great Uncle Valentine. They were well known in the district and their family went on to own various food shops. Can anybody help?   A. B.

Don't know if its any help to you, but I remember a Greehalgh's bakers in Moston from my Childhood, My grandad used to buy his bread there every day.

I seem to recollect that the bakery had been in the family for a while.
I will ask my dad tomorrow, I know he knew the family, I have a feeling I remember he went to school with someone in the family, but I am not 100% sure if I am remembering right.

Thanks for all replies.  I know for sure the family I am researching are not related to the Greenhalgh bakery chain scattered around Lanchashire -  that company was started in Bolton and the owner confirmed no connection in a reply e mail to my enquiry.  I've accessed the marriage and death records of Valentine and Florence thanks.

I think the Edward Greenhalgh on Butler street is the person I am looking for.  Edward Greenhalgh had several children but I don't know their names.  If anyone remembers this shop (known as Terry's in the 1960's) and remembers the Greenhalgh family who ran it in the late 1920's, I'd be grateful for any information.  Florence Greenhalgh (daughter of Edward) had a son who had Down's syndrome.  He was a well known figure in the Ancoat's/ Miles Platting/ Collyhurst areas in the 60's/70's.  Does anyone remember
(*) who could be seen banging a tin drum behind a brass band during Whitsun?

Hi AB,

I've edited your post to remove the name just in case the person is still alive.

If you check www.freebmd.org.uk and search for the surname FORD with mother's surname GREENHALGH a number of names come up - they may not all belong to the same family but you could speculate by the location.

Hope this is of some help,

Jean
