Meikle family East Lothian
« on: Saturday 29 January 11 12:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to trace Robert Meikle (bapt 9 Oct 1824 Tillycoultry, Clackmannanshire) son of James Meikle & Elizabeth Low.

So far I have found him in the following censuses:

1861: Dornoch, Sutherland - Coachman with his wife, Christina
1871: Pertinents of Ormiston Hall - Coachman
1881: Coachmans House, Ormiston Hall - Coachman Serv (birth however shown as Lasswade, Edinburgh)

I have found his wife, Christina and 2 sons in the 1891 census in The Wynd, Ormiston and having looked at the original his wife is still shown as married so he is away on the census night.

Can anyone please find him in 1841 and 1891 please?

I have his parents in the 1841 census in Firbank, Lasswade, Midlothian.

Thanks in anticipation ...

Just seen you hadn't had any replies Westwood.

One possibility in 1891 for Robert is this one:

Robert Meikle, 65, formerly coachman, b. Ormiston, Haddington

He shows as inmate at the Inveresk Combination Poorhouse.

Have you tried to follow through to deaths for wife and Robert? Have you found Christina and Robert together in 1901?

Monica  :)

Added: This Robert from 1891 is still showing at the Inveresk Combination Poorhouse in 1901: occupation coachman domestic, b. Lasswade, aged 72.

Hi Monica

Thanks for that; I have been able to find Robert's death on SP in 1903, Inveresk, Midlothian.

I had found him on the 1891 and 1901 censuses in Inveresk which led me to his death.

Always really pleased to hear from you  ;D

Yes, once again I am relying upon the 1911 Scottish Census being published at the beginning of April  ;D

Hi

I have lots of Lasswade Meikles, a name which they seem to have switched from Muckle in the 19th century.  Have you tried looking for Muckle?

The Clackmannanshire reference may be a red herring.

Hi,
I've just seen your post re; Robert Meikle. He was my late mother's great grandfather although she never met him as he died before she was born. Robert & his wife Christina had twin girls, one of whom, Mary, was my mother's grandmother - my mother had Meikle as her middle name. Any further family information you might have would be most welcome.
                                                     Cheers

Hi

Firstly, welcome to Rootschat; I am sure you will find us all very friendly and will gain alot of useful information; everyone is so helpful in my experience  :)

I have received alot of help from fellow Rootschatters so if you search on Meikle using my username, you will come up with the posts I have made on this family.

I also have a private tree on Ancestry.

I already had the twins you mention in my tree, although none of their spouses.

My direct ancester is James Meikle, Robert's father so therefore, Robert Meikle would be my 3rd great grand uncle (according to my family tree maker program).

I have just found Robert today in the 1851 census, under the mistranscribed name of Mackle; he is a domestic servant at Skibo Castle, Sutherland.  I am really pleased to have found this particular census as it answers a few queries with regards to Robert Meikle & Christina Murray's children's names, namely the middle name Dempster, for Joanna Hamilton Dempster Meikle born 1858 Sutherland and George Dempster Meikle, born 1864 Sutherland.

I look forward to hearing from you with any further information you can give me with regard to any of Robert Meikle and Christina Murray's chilodren.

Kind regards

An article in the latest Scottish Genealogy journal on the East Lothian Meikle's, one of whom invented the threshing machine. Family tree included.   Skoosh.
