Samuel William Riley 1868 Holborn
« on: Saturday 29 January 11 15:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi There,
I have found a Samuel William Riley b. Q Mch 1868 Holborn vol 1b page 615 & am wondering if he could be the brother of my Annie Esther Riley b. Q Sept 1870 Holborn ( certificate on its way ). Annie's father was Samuel William Riley, a porter when she married on 14th April 1895 Plymouth. I haven't been lucky enough to find her family yet & would be very grateful for any help, Thanks.

Have you found your Annie in 1871 or 1881?

I can only see one contender in 1871 - RG10 1465 118 10 (living in Oxfordshire) but her parents are clearly Thomas and Mary.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi Liz,
I haven't found Annie or her family on any census yet before her marriage in 1895 Plymouth, where her father is most dfinitely Samuel William Riley, only her birth on Free BMD in the Holborn district of London. The certificate should be with me next weekend. On the 1911 census, she states she was born in Smithfield, London. Hey ho. Thanks.

Hi

1891 census RG12 177 folio ?
19 Lucerne Road Islington
Annie E Riley 22 General Servant Smithfield - (indexed as such though the image I can see is cut off) London

1871 census RG10 377 folio 71
Grower? Court 27 Charterhouse Street St Sepulchre City of London
Samuel Riley 28 Head Married Coffee House Keeper
Mary A Riley 26
William S Riley 2
Annie H Riley 8 Months
plus 1 servant
all born London Middlesex

1881 census RG11 692 folio 444 Shards Square Peckham Camberwell Surrey
James R. Riley 37 Head Married Servant Club Stepney Middlesex (Hotel servant in 1891 clearly enumerated as Samuel R in that census)
Mary A. Riley 34 Wife Married Bethnal Green Middlesex
William S. Riley 12 Son St Luke Middlesex
Ann H. Riley 11 Daughter St Sepulchre Middlesex
Alice Riley 9 Daughter St Sepulchre Middlesex
George Riley 6 Son St Sepulchre Middlesex
Helen Riley 3 Daughter Holborn Middlesex

Restaurant porter on daughter's baptism in 1891 and 1901 census
Porter on son's baptism 1888
Plateman on son's baptsim in 1882
A cook on his children's baptisms in 1880 - some obviously late as 6 were baptised on the same day including William Samuel and Anne Hester.

3rd August 1880 St Jude Peckham Surrey
Anne Hester Riley parents Samuel Richard Riley and Mary Ann Riley, 4 Shards Square, father's occupation cook

Holborn including the St Sepulchre and Charterhouse districts

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/holborn.html

Hester or Esther was a commonly interchangeable spelling. The William on the marriage certificate maybe an error by the parish clerk or Annie may have thought her brother William Samuel was named for his father (both names). Ann(ie) was not with her parents on the 1891 census.

Deaths Jun 1925  Riley  Samuel R  83  Camberwell  1d 716

Samuel Richard Riley married Mary Ann Whiley in 1868

Regards

Valda

Hi Valda,
Blimey!! Thank you so much for all of this info. It's taken me a while to get my head around the name changes, not the first time I've found this in my tree. You mention that 6 were baptised on the same day in 1880 ( 3rd August St. Jude Peckham Surrey ? ) .... I'm wondering whether there were any middle names & who the 6th child was? Also, did they have more children ( baptisms after 1881 )?
You're a star & I can't thank you enough.
Kind Regards

Thanks Again Valda,

I've now got Annie's birth cert. & Samuel Richard Riley is named as her father. The Parish official when they married most definitely got it wrong!! Thanks to you I can now confidently order more certs. & trace the tree back a bit further. Happy hunting!
