Parish registers puzzle - COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 29 January 11 16:03 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please help me with an entry in the parish records that is really puzzling me!!  ???

I have the following entries:

John Tulip of Throckley Black Row Born November 25th 1805 Baptised January 26th 1806 1st son of William Tulip pitman native of Ovingham Parish by his wife Margaret Bones native of Lanchester
Bishop of Durham's Transcripts Newburn pg213

and
BoDT Jarrow, Heworth pg 394
Heworth, Co. Durham baptisms:
What looks like "Jno" Tulip of High Felling, born Oct 12 1808, bapt Dec 4 1808, 2nd son of William Tulip, Collier, native of Ovingham, and Margaret, daughter of Thomas Barnes, native of Lanchester

Durham Records online have transcribed Jno as John (although John is written out in full further down the page for another person).  In all the census John is down as being born in Northumberland and in 61 as Throkley, his age relates to John 1805 and his death cert also relates to 1805.  I have tried to find a death for John 1805 but not without much success!

I know that children died and their future siblings would be given the same name but I just feel that what is down in the parish register could be something other than John and would appreciate anyones input.  The daughter born before 1805 was Throckley and the children after 1808 were in Tynemouth.

Any help much appreciated

I was just about to post the same Jen.

Having looked at the image it's clearly written as Jno.  For whatever reason there's a mix of John & Jno's on the whole page, as well as George, Geo, William, Wm, Thomas & Thos, obviously the clerk hadn't heard of consistency  :D

It's not clear if DRO get their transcription from the parish register or the BT's, the period 1798 - 1812 is listed as a combination of both.  Might be work checking what the parish register has as it might be a mistake when the BT's were done.

mmmmmm
I reckon it is John - I keep looking at it and can't see it could be anything else.  The clerk who wrote up the page seems to use a lot of abbreviations for names and Jno is definitely used a number of times but having said that the entry two lines down from mine has John written in full.

It's just frustrating that I can't find a burial for John 1805 which would then be conclusive about Jno!

I'm guessing HMW transcribed from the PR's not the BT's?

posted my reply at the same time as you Jay!

Do I understand from your comment that the BT is different to the parish register?  In which case maybe I'll contact DRO to see where they got their transcription from.
