Records for Holloway Prison late 1890's early 1900's
« on: Wednesday 02 February 11 05:35 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me where to look for the Holoway Prison records in the 1890's.  I am looking for the trial of Rebecca Metcalfe who was in the Prison during the 1901 census.  Prison (Holoway)
Inmate: Rebecca Metcalfe, 67, widow, cook, Huntingdon

Thanks,
Heather

Hi

They are held at the London Metropolitan Archives

However the survival of prison records is very patchy. Holloway registers don't seem to have survived for the period you are interested in.

Rebecca's trial records may have survived but you would need to know which court she was tried in Assizes, Quarter Sessions or Petty Sessions (Magistrates Courts called Police Courts in London) and whether it was a London court. Trial records apart from those for the Old Bailey (and important trials held in Assize Courts) do not contain transcripts of the proceedings. Newspaper reports if they covered the trial would be more detailed. Holloway would have had prisoners who were only serving quite short sentences for misdemeanours as well as longer serving prisoners committed for more serious crimes, so not all the prisoners' trials would have been covered by local newspaper reports.

It might be worth reading The National Archives guide on Criminals in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/criminals-18th-20th-centuries.htm

to know what other records are available.

Valda
