George Mincks
« on: Wednesday 02 February 11 13:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find out anything about George Mincks. He married Clara Haswell on 1 June 1873 at St Thomas's, Stepney. His father's name is given as John Mincks, occupation looks like wood dealer.
Any information about George's birth or his parents will be appreciated.

Regards
Dave

I think this is the family you want:

1871 reference RG10, Piece 522, Folio 62, Page 30
White Bear Court, St Mary Whitechapel

Minks, Johannes  Head  M  52  Labourer  b Germany
Minks, Elisabetha  Wife  F  51  Bookbinder  b England
Minks, George  Son  M  23  Labourer  b England
Minks, Mary Ann  Daughter  F  21  Tailoress  b England
Minks, John  Son  M  19  Labourer  b England
Minks, Sarah  Daughter  F  16  Labourer at Match Factory  b England
Minks, Eliza  Daughter  F  8  Scholar  b England

Incidentally most of the heads of families in that aera seemed to have been born in Germany
Also, the original handwriting looks like the surname
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Many thanks for the info, folks.

CarolW.  Yes I did find him in the 1881 census.

KGarrad.  Thanks for the census entries. I have heard, from another source, that there were 2 Mincks families living in that part of London at that time. One group were English, and eventually migrated to Canada, and the other originated from Germany. Their family name started as Mintz and was changed along the way. Looks like my ancestor was from the second one.

There are these baptisms

St Mary Whitechapel baptism
1847 Nov 21, George Rodolph, s/o John & Elizabeth MINCKS, Waterloo Terrace, Coffee roaster, born Oct 4
1849 Oct 7, Mary Jane, d/o Johann & Elizabeth MINTS, Brick Lane, Cocoa roaster, born 1849 Jun 11
1856 Oct 26, Johannes, s/o Johannes & Elizabeth MINCKS, 9 Osborne Place, Coffee roaster, born 1851 Feb 28
1856 Oct 26, Sarah, d/o ditto, born 1856 May 4

The witnesses at George & Clara's marriage were John Mincks and Mary Jane Mincks

When John married in 1874 he gives his father as John, a coffee roaster. Mary Jane marries in 1876 and her father is John a cocoa roaster. Sarah marries in 1888 and her father is John a deceased coffee roaster

There is another John MINCKS around at the time who is a master mariner, marries in 1852 to an Elizabeth.

Had a look on Free BMD. Found the marriage reference for Johannas and Elizabeth in 1847, but couldn't find the births of any of the children. Is it possible that non of them were registered? Thought it was an offence not to.
Also would like to know when Johannas arrived in England.
