WILLS / ADMIN - useful information
« on: Thursday 03 February 11 15:57 GMT (UK) »
If anyone is wanting to obtain a copy of a will, and you have the address for YORK, there is a massive waiting list.

However, you can find exactly the same information via the probate Offices in Cardiff.

I know I'm probably preaching to the converted, but thought you might like to know ... it'll save you lots of time.

They will need the same information (ie date and address at death, whether it's admin, will or probate) and £5 per search.  This includes whatever they find - or not whichever the case maybe.

Do you have  date of death?  I provided a name and year of death for a relative of mine, and even though I had no further information, the Probate Office were able to locate the will for me.  You will have to apply in writing, and I wouldn't suggest using the York address as they are REALLY busy - any of the sub-offices will be able to do the same search for you - Cardiff is excellent.  They are £5 per copy.

Yes,  7 April 1850 in Gellywcca Fawr, Llanguicke, Glamorgan, Wales.

Do you know if I can apply for this through a website and pay online?  I am in the USA.

Thank you,

Lillian

is there a way you can scan the address onto this thread please?  That doesn't look right to me .. and I wouldn't want you sending off for it just in case ....

Unfortunately, I've just seen a posting about wills for PRE-1858 :

The Probate Service does not hold any records or documents prior to 1858. If you require information about these, you are recommended to contact:

The National Archives,
Kew,
Richmond,
Surrey, TW9 4DU
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Tel: +44 (0) 020 8392 5330

or your local authority archivist for guidance.

The National Archives also have a research guide, http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=220, on where to start your research prior to 1858.

I'd be happy to check the address for you prior to application though.

I've looked at the National Archives database and can't seem to pull up the will I'm looking for.   :(

Any other suggestions?

Thank you for your input.

I'm assuming that it was the same in Wales pre-1858 as it was in England.  The majority of English wills prior to 1858 are held by the Diocesan office of the area where the deceased lived, in which case you will need to know the Diocese and then find where the Archives are.  Hope this makes sense to you.  :)

Pre 1858 Welsh wills can be viewed online for free at:

You would need to search for Llanguicke  as 'Llangiwg'.
