Burial 1846 - but which churchyard
« on: Thursday 03 February 11 19:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

A while ago, I obtained the burial record of my ancestor, Mary Mazzei who died in Holborn in 1846. She lived at Brook Street, Hatton Garden.

However, the top of the register only states that the burials were in the parish of St. Andrew, Holborn.

I am assuming that this is the district and not the church.

Can anybody please tell me which churchyard this particular register is from?

Thanks,

Darin.

The burial register is for St Andrews Holborn.  But I think that it just means that's where the service was held.  By the 1840s many London churchyards were full to bursting and they were building cemeteries further out.

Valda on this site has done a guide to burials:

Chowns in Buckinghamshire
Broad, Eplett & Pope in St Ervan/St Columb Major, Cornwall
Browning & Moore in Cambridge, St Andrew the Less
Emms, Mealing & Purvey in Cotswolds, Gloucestershire
Barnes, Dunt, Gray, Massingham in Norfolk
Higho in London
Matthews & Nash in Whichford, Warwickshire
Smoothy, Willsher in Coggeshall & Chelmsford, Essex

Hi

Thank you for the burial guide mention Jeuel.

I think they would still be burying at St Andrew Holborn in the 1840s. The major churchyard closures began in the early 1850s after the Burial Act of 1852. They were listed in newspapers as they closed

e.g. this group listed in The Times 1st December 1853

Some modern photographs of St Andrew Holborn (very little land left around the church now)
