Born in India. Where to start? Help.
« on: Friday 04 February 11 10:26 GMT (UK) »
I have a James Smythe married my grandmas sister Mary Cobb in 1888,Sheffield. He is 32 years of age so born about 1856 and surprise, he is a widower.Father James Smythe deceased,a soldier. Then found him 1891 and 1901 in Sheffield. But only says born Calcutta, India.
1891
59, Jenkin Road, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield. RG12 Piece 3836,Folio 82 page 12.
Cannot find any record before his marriage in 1888.
I reckon to be pretty good at U.K. searches but do not really know where to start on this trail.
Can any one help me please.
Thanks,
Josie.

I would try Families In British India Society (www.fibis.org)

Click on Fibis database, and do a search there.

But not all of us have easy access to London!

E.G. I now live in the Netherlands; formerly Isle of Man; and grew up in the Bristol area.

Therefore I look at any which way of researching online.
FIBIS proved useful to me, so I pass it on when I hear of anyone wanting information re India.
