Galbraith & Kenmuir, - help pls
« on: Monday 07 June 04 09:03 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, I'm hoping for some help pls.  I have William Galbraith marr to Agnes Kenmuir 31.10.1824 Kirkolm, Wigtown.  She was b 1801 Kirkolm, Wigtown.  I have found 6 children of theirs.  Their son William [I have this info from his death cert] was b 1825 in Portpatrick, Wigtonshire.  He marr Elizabeth McWilliam in 1860 in Melbourne, Australia and died 24.07.1891 in North Deniliquin, NSW, Australia.  William's death cert shows his parents as William and Agnes Kannmer? LDS records have her surname as Kenmuir.  I have 4 of their children born in Kirkolm, one in Portpatrick and one in South Cairn.  Any help greatfully appreciated.
Cheers,
Julie  :)

Julie,
You have a member of the Kenmuir family, born in Wigtonshire, are there any connections to County Down in Ulster, or Cumberland?
David :)

Hi David, my apologies for now answering your post sooner [my daughter got married 2 weeks ago so have had to put the genealogy on hold for quite some time].  To date I have not found any connection to the places you mentioned but that's not to say there won't be.  I obviously need to widen my search as I've hit a brick wall so to speak.  Is there a connection with your family?
cheers,
Julie

Hiya,

Have you got the info from the 1851 census?  Wigtownshire isn't complete but this family is present...

Portpatrick
Address: South Crescent (896)
Household No: 2A/45

GALBRAITH, William /Head /mar / 60 / Ag Lab/ bn Ireland

GALBRAITH, Agnes /wife /mar / 45 / bn Kirkcolm Wgt

GALBRAITH, Jane /dau /unmar / 22 / / bn Kirkcolm Wgt

GALBRAITH, Charles /son /unmar / 19 / Fisherman / bn Kirkcolm Wgt

GALBRAITH, James /son /unmar / 17 / Fisherman / bn Kirkcolm Wgt

GALBRAITH, Elizabeth /dau / / 11 /  / bn Kirkcolm Wgt

Does this look like a good match?  It says William was born in Ireland and I have access at the library to a book of "runaway" marriages for Portpatrick.  This is a popular place for the irish to marry similar to Gretna for the English.  I'll check William and Agnes if you'd like?

Good luck with your research,

Pam

Hi Pam, many thanks for your reply.  Yes this certainly would appear to be the right family.  William's birthplace I got from his son William's marriage certificate, it lists William Snr's occupation as mariner which ties in with the 2 boys occupations on the census info you gave me.  The LDS site also lists a Jean b 1827 and William [my ancestor] b 1825.  Strange that they're not listed on the census.
Agnes' parents appear to be Charles Kenmuir b before 1776 Kirkolm and Jane/Janet Agnew b before 1778 Kirkolm, marr 17.03.1798 [this I got from the LDS site].  This is the first time I've come across an Irish connection in the family, very interesting, at least I know now where to start looking for more descendants.
Thanks again, cheers
Julie  :)

Hi Pam.  Have been going thru old postings of mine and was wondering whether you have access to the 1841 census at all and if so whether William and Agnes are on it?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers

I don't have any other access other than Freecen but hopefully you'll get lucky.
