Baxter Family
« on: Sunday 17 April 05 20:34 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace my family from Scotland- I know from talking to relatives and old letters that my great great grandfather Robert Baxter came from Dumfries and later moved to Co. Tyrone in Northern Ireland.
He married Jane (Henderson?) and had four children- Kyle, Robert, Maria and Mary. He may have been born in the mid to late 19th century.
I also have letters from 'Lizzie and Fergus' who lived in Fallin, Stirling and Kirkcudbrightshire. They may be related- I don't know.
Robert Baxter was, I believe, a coachman for a wealthy family in the area and may have links to Killentrae farm. I would love more information on this branch of the family- can anybody please help? :D

Hi,

You haven't mentioned any dates. Do you know when the couple were married or when any of there children were born?
I have checked 1851 census of the area and one couple match but their children are different.

If you give as much details as you can so anyone helping will know a bit more aobut where to look.
Regards
Amanda

Well, I'm not too sure of dates but I think they (Robert and Jane) must have lived in Scotland at lest until the early 1900's. Their son Robert enrolled in the army and was in the King's Own Scottish Borders. He enrolled in 1914, I believe, in Scotland and served at Kilintae farm, according to an old letter, with somebody called Maxwell. So they may have lived in Scotland to as late a date as 1914. On the commonwealth war graves site it says that at the time of Robert's death they lived in Tyrone. I have a section of the telegram notifying his parents of his death, but unfortunately the address is missing.
Just in case it will help, their daughter Maria was better known as Ria or Rya and she married Alexander McKenna who also had a family from Scotland. She was my great great aunt.
I hope somebody can help me with this.
I might also add that my ggrandfather Kyle married Ethel Henderson and I would also love to know more about her background. She had half-brothers and sisters called Deacon so she isn't easy to find on ancestry sites as I believe her mother may have remarried.
Thanx in anticipation!

P.S. Robert was 28 when he died so he must have been born in 1898 or 1899. Thats the only date I know for certain. He was my gg uncle

Hi,

There are a couple of things you could try. If you contact the Kings own Scottish Borders headquarters, they may still have records of Robert Maxwells enlistment which will tell you where he enlisted. Their recruitment area, as the name suggests is around the borders area, but it should give you a specific town and possibly further information.

Also if you try www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

This is a pay-per-view site. You pay £6.00 which gives you 30 credits to do searches if 1881,1901 & 1871 census. It also has birth, death and marriage records. You should be able to ifnd Roberts death cert which will also give you his parents names, which you can then check on census to find the rest of his family and birth place of both parents.

Good luck with your search

Sorry, I made a mistake: Robert Baxter Jr was born 1893 and died aged 23. I know his parents were Robert  and Jane so any census searches would be for them. Sorry if it is confusing: there are so many roberts in the family. I will try a census search...

If you go onto scotlands people website, hopefully you can find Robert & Jane's marriage.
Sometimes it's a bit of a pain trying to find what you are looking for if you don't have a lot of information but you should do ok with the marriage. I have managed to trece a few of mine this way.

My subscription has expired so i can't check for you. Have a look though, you never know!
