Descendants of Joseph BRINDLEY, brother to Canal Engineer James BRINDLEY
« on: Sunday 06 February 11 01:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Apparently Joseph BRINDLEY, brother of Canal Engineer James BRINDLEY, married Sarah BENNITT (?) and they had 6 children.

The third child was daughter Elizabeth, born in 1751 in Alton.  She married a Thomas SALT on 21/07/1771.  Thomas was also born in Alton.

I am looking for anything about Elizabeth and particularly Thomas SALT.  What were their children's names?  When were the children born?  Did they have a son or grandson called Matthew SALT who was born in Alton about 1793?

Thanks in anticipation.  :)

The FamilySearch site https://www.familysearch.org shows the following children baptised by Thomas SALT and Elizabeth in Alton:

James - 24 Apr 1774
Mathew - 22 Jun 1788
Mary - 8 May 1790

There are also some children baptised in Cheadle, which is less than 5 miles from Alton, so possibly the same family:

William - 1 Sep 1771
Thomas - b. 8 Feb 1778 and bap. 9 Feb 1778
Easter - 9 Jul 1786

Many thanks  :) and how frustrating  ???
I so want the son Matthew SALT to be born about 1793 and then I have made the link my family has been looking for for the past 100 years.  Everything else fits.

According to the 1841 Census, my Matthew SALT was aged about 45 in 1841 which makes him born about 1795, in Alton.  In the 1851 Census, he claims to be 58 and born in 1793, in Alton.  He died in 1852.

According to family folklore we are somehow related to James BRINDLEY, the Canal Engineer.  This can only be on my female side and is either through Matthew SALT or his first wife, who, according to another rootschatter, could have been a Mary HANDLEY.

Again, thanks.  :) :) :)

Matthew Salt married again to Jane ?
There's this marriage:
Matthew Salt/Sept.1844/Macklesfield/19/99
possible spouses/Jane Ward/Jane Wych
This will give his fathers name.

Remember the ages of adults in the 1841 census were rounded down to the nearest 5 (although there are variations) so your man could well have been 48 (born 1793).  MaxD
I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

I've recently transcribed a fair chunk of the St Peters, Alton Registers.
The listings I have for Thomas and Elizabeth Brindley are:
their marriage on 21 July 1771 (witnesses Matthew Bennett & Edward Botham)

their children baptised at St Peters:
Joseph - 21 June 1772
James - 24 july 1774
Ruport - 18 June 1780
Ellin - 1 Sept 1782
Joseph - 11 May 1784
Easter - 9 July 1786
Matthew  - 22 June 1788

I've just checked and the Matthew above is the only Matthew Salt baptised at St Peters within 30 years either side of that date.  So maybe you need to be looking a little futher afield for your Matthew??
Let me know if you want me to check anything else from the Alton Registers. :)
RATCLIFFE, BARLOW, BERESFORD, BLOOR, BYATT, DAKIN, KENT, LEES, MORTON, NORCLIFFE, OAKS, OSBORNE, PARKS, RICHARDSON, ROBINSON, SORTON, WETTON, WARRINGTON, WATTS, WOOD, WOLVERSCROFT (all from the Staffordshire Moorlands) - and specific interest in anyone who at any time lived in or around the village of ALTON

aitch,

Thank you for this information. :) Do you have any idea where the Matthew may have gone?  He seems about 5 years too old to be my man, but I live in hope.  :)
