Missing wine cooper - Thomas James Richards
« on: Sunday 06 February 11 18:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi
THOMAS JAMES RICHARDS (b30 Nov 1846 Cripplegate) married CAROLINE HAYNES (b abt 1844 City of London) on 21 July 1867 at St James, Shoreditch. He was a wine cooper at that time as was his father JOSEPH CHARLES RICHARDS. On 1871 census they were living at 3 Red Lion Street ,St Andrew, Holborn His name on the census is James and a beermaker. After that they 'disappeared' I have tried RICHARDSON and HAYNES, also both Thomas and James on all the available census with no luck.
I thought I might have found his death but the certificate confirms that it was not him. This one died 27 Apr 1876 in Islington but his age is completely wrong and  a step daughter was present at his death, Caroline was a spinster when she married [without any children] age 20 so another sign that is the wrong certificate. I have search for this pair for years so would be pleased for any help or advice.

Thanks

Cullen

Hi Cullen

Looking at the 1871 Census that you found, (RG10 372 4 1), James's occupation looks like "Bootmaker", not Beermaker.  And the age is given as 30, so five years out.  Perhaps this is not your couple?

Have you looked at migration records?

Hi Maryam,

I have looked and looked at the 1871 entry for years and assumed t was the right one as Caroline gives her place of birth as City of London, but your right, it does look more like Bootmaker.
I have tride migrartion record at findmypast but they don't start that early, are there other options for migration?

Neither family at 15 Clifton STreet in 1861 or 1871 census.

How do you know this is the right marriage?

Hi Jennifer

I know this is the correct marriage because of Caroline's father's name and profesion, also the witnesses are one of Caroline's sisters and her husband.
I agree that neither of the families are living in Clifton Street on 1861 or 71 census, in 1861 the Haynes family or in Ironmongers Row, Clerkenwell and 71 she s not there as she has married.
I have now checked the 1880 usa census and 1881 canadian but no results there.
also checked NSW bmd'd for possible children or death and queensland bmd's - no luck.

Hi Kay

It's so annoying when they just disappear into thin air, isn't it!

Ancestry have immigration passenger lists that start much earlier than they've reached in FindMyPast; unfortunately there are lots of Thomas Richards bc 1846  ???  I've looked at 1870 US and 1871 Canadian Censuses but nothing is jumping out of the page with Thomas/James & Caroline Richards living together.  I can't see them baptising children either, but they could have moved anywhere or died...

They're not with Thomas's widowed mother Jane and his siblings either in 1871, but you probably know that.

Not sure what to suggest  :-\

Hi Maryam

I appreciate your efforts. I have tried for a few years to find them without success I just thought with all the new resources online I would give them another blast.
I have found various other members of the Richards family in years after 1871 just incase they were staying with them on census night.
It is possible both died but there are too many options for certifiactes and they are not showing in London PR's at the moment - luckily I can use that at my local library.
I will look for them again in a year or so.

Thank you
