HELP with LETTS
« on: Monday 07 February 11 01:21 GMT (UK) »
??? I have the following and can't make it work.

1911 Census Harold Allen LETTS 33 H (born Brixton, London  -  Elizabeth LETTS 18 Wife born Southsea, Portsmouth..... Living in Lambeth.

I cannot find Harold in the 1901 or 1891 census in fact I just put LETTS in and it tells me there is no records which is wrong.....

I have searched for a marriage of Harold from 1909 to 1911. I cannot find him marrying anyone...

I have a birth certificate of Harold Stuart LETTS (ancestor) born 26/09/1911 Lambeth whose father is Harold Allen LETTS and mother is Elizabeth Stuart LETTS formerly TOMES.

The only Elizabeth TOMES I have found is a Bessie TOMES born in 1890 in London her name is Bessie in 1901 and in 1911 she became Elizabeth Florence TOMES.... I thought she was our one until I saw the census record with Harold and another Elizabeth who is younger  and born in a different place.

I think Harold A LETTS remarried in 1912 to an Isabella A LAING in 1913 they had a child.

We have been lead to believe that Elizabeth remarried to a Michael YOUNG because HS LETTS knew is father was HA LETTS but that he died in the war????

ALL help accepted... Glenda

Hi,
It looks as if he married Maude Millicent. They have a daughter Mildred Allen Letts in 1897 Forest Hill London. In 1901 she is with her Josling grandparents. Maude is saying she is single and working as a nurse. Of Harold there is no sign.

I can't find Maude dying before 1911

He does seem then to marry in 1912, I don't know if he married Elizabeth at all

There is a Harold A Letts  dying in Wandsworth in sept q 1956 aged 78

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp
 - if you search here, it shows Maude divorced Harold Allen Letts in 1910.
The case file might be interesting. :)

I'm sure "died in the war" was simply Elizabeth's way of explaining why Harold Sr wasn't around.  And there was a family WWI death, if that 1901 census is correct - Lawrence Tomes is on the WWI medal cards index at the National Archives as a member of the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and the same man (indexed as L. Tomes) died in 1915 and is buried in France.  (freebmd.rootsweb.com shows only one Lawrence/Laurence Tomes, so I'm fairly certain this is him).

Hello

I'm sitting with one of my cousins on my mother's side. Our grandfather was called Harold Allen Letts. He married Isabella Agnes McIntyre Laing and they had four children, two girls and two boys.  He died when he was 78 (from lung cancer). She survived him by about 25 years. We knew he was married before he met our grandmother, and had a daughter, but don't know anything about another marriage and a son. He's described as a bachelor on his marriage certificate to Agnes. He probably missed a census because he was at sea.

My cousin thinks he had a wife, prior to Agnes, called Millicent Maude (spelling may not be correct here).

Our grandparents lived in Clapham all their married life.  And his father was Samuel Allen Letts.

Hope this helps!

Hello again

I’ve had a fresh look at this and done some sums re ages – they are all approximate as I’ve calculated from my mother’s birth date, spoken information and memory, rather than official records. Yes, my grandfather Harold Allen Letts died in 1956. He married my grandmother Isabella Agnes McIntyre Laing when she was 14 years old. That fits with a marriage in 1912. Harold Allen Lionel Letts (or maybe some other name with Lionel) was their first child and the date of 1913 seems to fit for his birth year.

I understand from my cousin who has been involved in ancestry searches, that he and Millicent Maude (but could be Maude Millicent) were divorced before he married my grandmother.
