help required!!!
« on: Tuesday 08 February 11 13:54 GMT (UK) »
I have been tracing my family tree, but appear to have hit a stumbling block with part of my family, and am not sure what is the right place to post this.
I have the marriage certificate of my great grandad, and on it states that his father at the time was deceased. I am trying to get back further than this but it is provign difficult as I have no relatives as far as I know that I can ask on that side.

My great grandad was called Eric Gates, and the only one which I can find with the correct estimated birth year was born in Birmingham but his brothers and sisters were all born in southampton. The census record also only displays their mother on this, on the assumption that this is the one which I am looking for, could it be possible that if they were born in southampton they may have come over from some other country?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I do not have any information of brothers and sisters unfortunately, the only information I have like that is of my grandads brothers and sisters.

I have the marriage certificate, which states the following:
Eric Gates (27, House Painter, fathers name - Frank Gates, Gas Fitter) married Ada Eden (19, Spinster).
Married on 11th March 1933 in Birmingham
Address at time of marriage - 1/150 Darwin Street.

The census record i found with Eric Gates on is 1911 census.

Where did you find Birmingham as Eric's suggested place of birth?

Looking at freeBMD, there were 2 births for an Eric Gates in 1905; one in Maryolebone and the other (Eric Bernard) in Middlesborough. There are no other births listed for Eric Gates between 1905 and 1910  (there are 2 listed for 1900 though).

Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)

I found it on the findmypast website where you can see the full versions. I am not definately sure of Birmingham, but my understanding from my dad is that he was born in Birmingham.

Who were the witnesses, any clues as to more family there?

He was a lot older than Ada- I wonder if he shaved a couple of years off his age?

Hi have you the full 1911 or are you obtaining the info re Eric from the index, if you have the transcript can you tell us who else is shown, as this may give us a clue to finding his parents in earlier census returns?
