Looking at freeBMD, there were 2 births for an Eric Gates in 1905; one in Maryolebone and the other (Eric Bernard) in Middlesborough. There are no other births listed for Eric Gates between 1905 and 1910  (there are 2 listed for 1900 though).

The Marylebone one was christened at St Marks Marylebone 23rd March 1905 together with a Stanley Gates - mothers name Ethel Gates, no fathers name given.

They moved about a lot didn't they!

Can't find them in 1901 though  ::)

Tried looking for a 2 year old Mable born Southampton or with mum called Mario(a)n to no avail.....hmmm.

I haven't found them in previous censuses either.

Neither can I find any marraiges between a Frank Gates and a Marion Anything; nor an obviously suitable death for Frank Gates between 1904 - 1911 (which you would expect if he was this Eric's father but Marion was a widow by 1911).

Looking at the 1901 census, neither can I find any Frank Gates (or Francis etc) who was a gas fitter, anywhere in the country.

An Eric Gates b 17th May 1905 died in Birmingham in March 1/4 of 1977.

Can't see a suitable birth for any of them though?

Me neither. No Edward Gates born in the Birmingham area between 1901 - 1905.

Do we have a surname change here?

She said she's been married 21 years.....oh yeah!
Oldest son (whom she has listed as brother) is 23.

Either Frank never existed or she's not really a Gates and has registered all the kids with a different surname........don't like the look of either of the Eric's born in June 1/4 of 1905 in Bham though.

All very confusing.

Carol

PS off to see if any of the older brothers served in WW1...

I too wonder if Frank existed, or if he was a handy invention to calm social mores when the wedding certificate was completed.

Births Jun 1888

George Church C GATES   Southampton ref 2c 7

The second C stands for Colson.

Serves in WW1 and from that info I can see that he marries Lena Hunt in Smethwick on 24th Dec 1915.
Which puts him in the Birmingham area  ;) He is a works foreman.
