I don't know what An*****y charges for a birth cert but if it more than  £9.25 there is a better place to get certs--like directly from the government

Buy any birth, marriage or death certificates from the General Register Office http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/  or from the relevant local register office, where they cost £9.25 or £9 respectively.  Buying through Ancestry or any other agent will cost you an arm and a leg! The refs given above eg Glendale 10b 299 only work for the GRO.  To buy from the local Register Office, you need to give the name, date and place of the event - most (or even all) ROs have a downloadable form you can fill in, but you can order a certificate from GRO online.  They will send the certs by post, it's not legal to send them by email.

Anderson - Newcastle mid 19 cent
Boullen - London then Carlisle then Manchester

Thanks once again for the advice, Birth Certificate ordered from the GRO @ £9.25.

Bargain compared to other sources :-X

Will let you know the result... probably Margaret Ballantyne with the incredibly romantic Scots name.

Well who would have thought it. I now have a copy of the Birth Certificate and .... and unbelievably..... Mother's Maiden Name: formerly "Darling". Trying to imagine what circumstances could have prevailed, was her Mother a Widow of a Brother, Kissing Cousin or absolutely unrelated.

Fathers Name: William Darling
Mothers Name: Margaret Darling formerly Darling
Registration was Glendale, Subdistrict Wooler
30th June 1855, Hazelrigg, Chatton.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Oh dear, who'd 'a thought it!
First i searched for a Darling marriage to a Darling - nothing.
Then I went looking for a Margaret Darling in the censuses.
1841 there are two
HO107/833/book 15 portfolio 5 page 3
Shedlaw Carham  Glendale which matches with the birth cert of young Grace
William Darling 40 ag lab
Grace 40
Jane 15
Elizabeth 15 (remenbering that ages rounded down in 1841 so may not be twins)
Margaret 14
William 8
Isabella 2
All born in county  This one does have the mother Grace

1841 HO107/821 book4 folio 14 page 21 Cowpen Red house farm Horton Cowpen
William Darling 60 Farmer
Ann 50
George 20
Isabella 15
Margaret 14
Mary Ann 12
All born in county.  No young William in either of these families.
In 1851 there is only one Margaret showing and she is a servant n Thomas Hodgson JP household born Berwick upon Tweed age 23 HO107/2421/683/3
There is a death for a Margaret Darling in Sept 1/4 1849 Gateshead reg dist vol 24 page 112 so that could explain why there is only one showing in 1851 census. but there are also quite a few marriages
Now we need to find William in the earlier censuses and without a marriage cert that could prove difficult.

In 1851 there are 4 William Darlings. I discounted three because of their occupations - stonemason, shoe maker, cabinet maker. The one left

Many Thanks for your help here Crisane.

My old brain is a bit overwhelmed, I have looked at the detail so many times, rejoined Ancestry for another short period and haven't been able to point at any with any conviction saying "You are the persons".

What I have found out is, there is a mis-transcription in the 1941 Census that I found previously and you came to the very same person:
Margaret Darting
[Margaret Darling]

Also I should have mentioned the Birth Certificate for Grace stated her father was an Agricultural Labourer.

I  thought and had a hunch that the Glendale: William & Grace were the ones but haven't been able to convince myself that I am sure.

Have you looked on a map Holy Island, Kyloe, Ford, Millfield, Wooler, Chatton, Belford, Bamburgh are all within 12 mile circle of each other.

2 questions:

Sept 1/4 1849 what does that mean?
Marriage of William Darling and Margaret Darling is that what I need to seek?

Thanks for your patient help, it is most appreciated,

Alan

Alan

On FreeBMD when looking for BMD's they are grouped in to four quarters of each year. So Jan/Feb/March are the March 1/4,
April/May/June are June 1/4,
July/Aug/Sep are Sept 1/4 and Oct/Nov/Dec are Dec 1/4.
So no definite month given for an event just a choice of any one of the three months
within the stated quarter.

Yes we need to find a marriage for a Margaret Darling to a William Darling and I can't !

Does the birth cert only say formerly Darling, no other previous name for the mother?
As you say she could be a widow of another Darling, unfortunately there are no children of previous marriages evident in the census records with this couple if that were the case.
I will have to re-acqaint myself with the details and see what else comes up.
Maybe others will have some fresh ideas.

William being an ag lab is why I discounted all the other William's I found as they all had professions.

I have been trawling the net tonight and found this record on "Family Search" and wondered what anyone's thoughts are.

If it hadn't been the "Margaret Darling" formerly "Darling" mention on the birth Certificate of "Grace Darling". this would appear to be somewhere near :-\ the marriage I have been looking for. Why would there be a formerly "Darling" mention on the Birth Certificate especially when the gap between Agnes and Grace is only 3 years. Could they have remarried in England after being married in Scotland ???

Name:      William DARLING
Gender:    Male
Birth:       1824
afn:         GD9Q-54
Marriages  1
Spouse:    Margaret KERR
AFN:         GD9Q-4X
Marriage:   1850 Dec 19
                Duns, Berwickshire, Scotland

Child 1:     Agnes DARLING (AFN: GD9Q-69 )
Gender:     Female

Thanks in advance I may nearly be there..
