possible place in ireland
« on: Tuesday 08 February 11 23:10 GMT (UK) »
My father's grandfather came from ireland and on the census for 1901 he is listed as having been born in trake ?? ireland. does this exist, or could it be that the person doing the census couldn't understand a gaelic word and wrote down what they thought it was. his age is given as 37.

1901 Census- Llanelly (Llanelly St Elli Ecclesiastical parish) Llanelly civil parish,
Carmarthenshire, Wales-

John Bennett, 37, son-in-law, born Trake, Ireland
Also in household: Dennis Crowley 58 (head), Mary Crowley 28, Bridget Bennett 34 (daughter), Dennis J Bennett 3 (grandson)

it does look like Trake..I've attached an extract below

I've include a line which shows Pembroke as a comparison for the 'k'

(full census return images are not allowed)

There's a TREAGH in Co Louth in the PLU of Dundalk
- this would probably be pronounced Tray-ock

The nearest I can think of is Strake in County Mayo. It's on one of the islands.

I know it doesn't correspond to what is written on census but just a thought.
