FreeBMD vs YorkshireBMD
« on: Monday 18 April 05 08:22 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Does anyone know whether the info on these two sites is reported differently?
I have found people whose registration is in the March quarter of a particular year on FreeBMD and whose birth year is given as the previous year on YorkshireBMD.

eg  Christiana Berry Mar Q 1895 Hunslet 9b 266 and 1894 Hunslet Leeds HUNS/164/1

I know the GRO data  on FreeBMD is the quarter of registration, but I don't know if YorkshireBMD is the same or the actual birth date.

Any ideas?

I think you are right and it is possible that she was born late in one year and not registered until the March quarter of the next one.    Why not ring the local office and ask?

Probably because posting here is cheaper than an international phone call.
But, seriously, because this website has such a diverse range of knowledge and experience. I am sure someone else has struck the same situation (and has the answer)

Cheers,

I think one of them is likely to be a transcribing error......the event would only be registered once - and should be indexed under that year.  So both registers SHOULD correspond.

A birth would be registered locally - say Nov 1st  1888  in Leeds - a copy would have been sent to 'Head Office' - and the 'copy' indexed in the quarter for which it was registered  Dec  q. 1888...even though it was rec. in the new year !

Hi Peter

From the Yorkshire bmd site:

Quote
b) The Year in which the birth was registered. In some cases only a range of up to five years is indicated at present because of the way in which the indexes were originally compiled, but exact years will be provided wherever possible. Remember that the year relates to when the child was registered, and that a child born in December 1849 may not have been registered until January or February 1850, for example.
