« on: Thursday 10 February 11 04:55 GMT (UK) »
Need help please I may have finally found  my gr grandmother in Forres at 334 Bristant Place

M?? Mcdonald age 17 a nurse  b  Dingwall, Ross-Shire

This maybe my gr grand mother Mina Mcdonald b. 1854 Ross Shire/ Inverness ( I have 2 different places of birth on her childrens b.certs), she was nurse on her immigration listing to NZ in 1878. Is anyone able to look at the original entry to clarify the ???'s.
I am unable to find this M or W (may have been Wilhelmina) Mcdonald in 1861 census, so appreciate any help at all. Her parents were William McDonad & Annie. William was a game keeper. crossing fingers, Vicki

Hi Vic

This is what it looks like  :-\

I'll see if I can darken it later today.

I've also asked for an enhanced image.

Hi again Vicki

I've received a rescan from SP and, although it's not perfect, it definitely shows that her first name is Mary. The middle word is unclear, possibly Ann

Terrible printing but I agree it looks more like
Mary Ann than any other name and hence the
nickname of Mina.
Her Mum was Ann as well so I would be 99% sure.

Not sure about Mina being a pet name for Mary Ann - it could be -  but in my experience of Rossshire,  it was more likely to be for Williamina/Wilhilmina and the other names ending with mina./ina.

Thank you all, Justlooking you are right mina was short for Wilhelmina/Williamina. In this case My mina was "Wilhelmina" this appears on one child's b. cert only. All other cert's I have for her are Mina / Minna!!
I was so hoping that this entry would be her, Mi...and a couple of long n's & then an a..Minna.
For the life of me I cannot find her in 1871 or 61. Her father was William McDonald occup. gamekeeper. (source d.cert) I have found only 1 b. in 1811-15 Alvie but tracking him through he appears to have not married  :(
Her mother was Ann (d. cert has her as Ann Mcdonald).
Minna migrated to Scotland in 1878 on ship OPAWA age 22 of Ross-Shire, occup nurse...I think as I have found no other entry at all.
Shall i make this post completed ? or keep it open in the hope that someone may have any ideas on how/where i can possibly find her in Scotland.
i will keep digging. cheers from oz Vicki

Hi Vicki  :)

I'd leave the thread open if I were you. Someone, somewhere might have some information some day.

A considerable number of baptisms weren't listed before Statutory reg. in 1855. Unfortunately, your Mina came in just before that.

Do you have any indication what part of Ross-shire she came from, apart from the Alvie one, which is Invernessshire?
