;D It's always the way when things are difficult to find!

What were the mother's maiden names and father's occupations?

Hi Monica

Both the Census you've found and the birth cert look right. On the marriage cert:

John Maguire is an Ironstone Miner and his wife is Catherine Ranihan? - difficult to read.  John McShane is a Coal Miner and his wife is Catherine McGaffney.

Also on the marriage certificate it gives Bernard's residence simply as Nitshill (which is an area close to Barrhead) and Ellen's as Printer's Row, Barrhead.

I don't have access to Ancestry.com at home so will have to wait till I'm back in the library to have a dig around the census.

Thanks for all your help.

This looks to be Bernard's birth entry on IGI:

Bernard MC GUIRE  Born on 8 JAN 1865 in New Kilpatrick, Dunbarton
Parents: John MC GUIRE and Catherine RANAHAN

This couple look to have an earlier born Bernard (b. on 5 Nov. 1861 Abbey Paisley who must have died young and name re-used).

I am wondering whether this could be Bernard in 1891:

Patrick McGuire 33 coal miner b Nitshill, Renfrew
Margt McGuire 25, wife
Bernard McGuire 26, boarder, coal miner b. Garscadden, Dumbarton

Address: 58 (d) Westburn, Cambuslang Lanarkshire

Patrick McGuire 13 b. Nitshill, Renfrewshire
John McGuire 10
Elizabeth McGuire 11
Bernard McGuire 6 b. New Kilpatrick, Dumbartonshire
Mary McGuire 2
Catharine McGuire 10 Months

Address: 49 ? New Kilpatrick, Dumbartonshire

There are a number of trees on Ancestry that you could perhaps have a look at when you next have access for John McGuire and Catherine Ranachan (just search for Ran* for her surname as different trees have different spellings). Bernard's parents look to have died a few months after each other in the first half of 1901 in Nitshill. I'll leave you to follow up on these (as this is all part of the fun  ;)). Their parents' names look to have been included on their death certs.

Still leaves us with where were Bernard and Ellen in 1901 though.... ::)

One search that will help you lots given the family were Roman Catholic is a search of the Scotlands People RC birth & baptisms database. I am getting 14 entries showing for children to a Bernard M*Guire and a *El*n McShane. Hopefully the names of their early born children will help in finding them on the censuses (including the soon to be released 1911 census on 5 April). You are lucky that whichever parish they had the children baptised at is now available on SP, specially from this later period  :)

Hi Sarah / Monica,

I stumbled across this post by accident when looking for someone else so I'm only 10 years late in replying!

I'm guessing the 1901 census info might have been found already, if not I had a quick look working back from Monica's suggestion on births and baptisms and I think the answer is in Camlachie.

Bernard's first name isn't indexed on Scotlandspeople and his age is listed as 26 instead of 36. Let me know if this is still of interest and I can send the details from the census.

I'll drop scotlandspeople an email to see if the index can be amended.

Cheers

Duncan
