Can anyone identify this place?
« on: Thursday 10 February 11 14:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Please could somebody help me with a place name.

I have an Elizabeth James, who married a Daniel Bond in Sunninghill Berkshire in 1805. In the 1851 census Elizabeth (now Bond) gives her place of birth as Brecknockshire. She also gives a parish/area.

It has been transcribed as Givendor, and it does appear that way to me, but I am unable to find a Givendor area in Brecknockshire.

I am hoping someone may know of an area that may sound like that to an English ear, and point me in the right direction.

I have attached the image for you to see.

Sorry, I can't get the attachment to work!

Sussed it!  ;)

Thanks,

Linda

I wondered that, as there are not too many places that begin with 'G'.

Cheers,

Hi
Don't know the area. Gwenddwr appears to be in Talgarth area. Gwenddwr does not appear to be listed in Ancestry's list of parishes in 1841 Census, but Talgarth is.
A lookup request under Breconshire might help.

Hi
Had a look at entry on Ancestry. Givendor is a correct transcription, but mis-spellings of Welsh names are common in censuses. Elizabeth James is a common name in Talgarth area going from census evidence.
For anyone with access to Parish Records of that area, date of birth according to 1851 Census is c. 1774.

Even today.    When speaking over the phone to an englishman,  it is easy for the englishman  to get wrong the name of the place.

For example.   There is an area near me called Ffrith Beach.    The englishman thought I had said Free Speech.

Please do not blame the Welsh.  The English should LISTEN better.      ;D

Wow,  :D

I've managed to post the image of the transcription in my original posting.
I was going to post the whole page for comparison of hand writing, but I've been told that's not allowed (copyright).

Now I need to get to terms with the patronymic naming system.  :o

How on earth do you work out who's connected to who with so many people and so few names?

There is an Elizabeth James baptised on 25 Sept 1774 in Llanspyddid (father James Parry). Would this be in the right area?
The IGI doesn't give the mothers name, so how do I find the right James Parry,... and would James Parry's father be .... Parry somebody else?  ???

Any way, ............ Cheers.
