Hi Kasn

I think a lot of us just get hooked by Genealogy.  It doesn't matter whose family we're looking for, it's the looking that's important   :)

We have all had help on here from others and we then stay here and help others.  ;D

How far back have you actually documented your family?

No! definately! I think its great what you guys are all doing! Its just too bad that I cant be of more assistance to people!

As far as how far back, Ive gone back to 1867. That is the date of birth for my great grandfather. I would really love to do his father too if possible! I know going back further than that will be a struggle! But if I could get one more relative I'd be satisfied!

So Kasn, if your family went from Scotland to Ireland, your earlier research will be in Scotland? A lot of Irish left Ireland during the 1800s as you probably know.

Have your researched in Scotland before? There are excellent resources for research in Scotland. Research in Ireland is a lot more difficult for many of us.  ;)

Families who travelled from Scotland/Ireland can sometimes be picked up on the various Scottish censuses, which will give places of birth. Often you can trace a families movements through the places their children were born.

If you'd like to tell us the name and place of birth of your Great Grandfather, then we might be able to give you some help to get you started.

Hi!

Sure! That would be great!
Any help or information is always great!

So his full name is

Samuel Banks Nelson
B July 1867
D Feb 1954/5 (can't remember right this second)

He was married to a Margaret Mckay and to Ashley Jean Lindsay

I believe margaret was first

I have info on samuels 3 sons and on where he lived once he left ireland, but as far as his life in ireland goes I have no info
(Reader be ware! He had a son named samuel banks nelson jr!) But the jr part wasn't always used from what I've seen! Lol!!

Hope this helps!!
Wish I could be in Ireland to search!

Oh, also, I'm assuming because he was born in ireland in 1867 that either his parents are irish, and his grandparents are scots, or his parents are scots and come sometime in the early 1800's?

Did he die in Scotland? If so, his death certificate should give both of his parent's names. In fact so will his marriage certificates if he married in Scotland ...  ;)

Do you have any documents such as birth, marriage or death certificates to back this info up, or is it word of mouth through the family? Do you have the family in any censuses?

Hi,

From what I can see from papers I've seen online he was born and raised in Ireland (still debating if its belfast or donaghadee) and moved to the USA in his either late r0's early 40s

I have the 1910 census with him on it and it lists ireland as his birth place

He died in hamilton Ontario canada.
I have contacted the presbyterian church in canada for any records they have on him because he was a very well known minister
But other than that I can't find birth records yet because I'm not sure what city he was born in
Also, I'm in canada and its hard to order that stuff over the internet!!
