Dr. Samuel Secker / Grace Gertrude Secker/Dr. John Edward Andrew
« on: Friday 11 February 11 17:39 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to understand the life and times of Dr. Samuel Secker and one of his daughters Grace Gertrude Secker.
Dr. Secker  was the father of my Great Grandmother, Grace Gertrude Secker.
Grace Gertrude Secker married  Dr. John Edward Andrew,of Hemsworth,Yorkshire on the 27th June 1880 at St. John's Church,Melbourne, colony of Victoria
Constance Gertrude Andrew,my maternal grandmother  was their first born., at Clunes,Victoria on 27th March 1881
They emigrated to the colony of Victoria as it was then ,arriving on the Steamer Liguira at Melbourne on the 27th June 1880, having embarked at London
Dr. Andrew commenced practice as a medical doctor,MRCS Lon.,LCP Ed., in Clunes in 1880 and Grace Gertrude Secker, his wife   bore 9 children.

I am hoping that those  names will connect with some other members interests.
I am grateful for any leads and/or information.
Thank you,
phipps1

The 1861 census reference is   RG9 Piece 3425 Folio 57 Page 7

Have you bought a copy of your grandmothers birth cert to check the details

Carole,
I appreciate all the leads you have given me. Thank you !

I think the only Scottish link now is the Edinborough University one where I am trying to find out when Dr. Andrew graduated .

I agree that the Yorkshire connection is the appropriate one now.

I am not sure how to deal with that. Perhaps if I modify the Edinborough post, that will sort things out.Do you think so ?
 Kind regards,

philip

Just following through from the Scottish post and with some info on the Andrew and Secker families.

Firstly on the Andrew side, this looks to be John with family in 1861 - the children all show as having been born in Hemsworth, Yorkshire where the family are living in 1861:

Charles Andrew 40, school master and clergyman b. Ripley, Yorkshire
Mary B Andrew 33 b. Dorchester, Dorset
William T Andrew 10
Charles H Andrew 9
Jane A Andrew 6
John E Andrew 5
Mary T Andrew 3
Constance H Andrew 11 Months

Some staff show with them together with a number of pupils.

Ref: RG9, Piece 3441, Folio 5, Page 4

Can't easily see as yet John's family in 1871, although possible entries for some of the children working/visiting/ boarding as students around the country, but this looks a likely entry for his mother in 1881, already widowed at 33 Tyrwhitt Rd, Greenwich, London:

Mary B. Andrew 53, widow, School Mistress, b. Dorchester, Dorset
Constance H. Andrew 20, Assistant School Mistress, b. Hemsworth
Letitia M. Andrew 19, Student Of Medicine b. Hemsworth

Some staff and boarders also show in the household.

Ref: RG11, Piece 713, Folio 83, Page 8

For 1871, John Edward Andrew, 15, is boarding at the home of a Thomas Dixon, school master in the town of Bingley in Yorkshire.

By 1880 we know that John Edward had already left the UK with his marriage that year to Grace Gertrude.

For Grace Gertrude Secker, I think she married on the day of her arrival in Australia! From that newspaper notice we had on the other post, the marriage date was 27 June 1880. This looks a possible shipping entry for her arrival:

Miss Grace Secker, 24, arrival port showing as Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney on 27 June 1880. Left from London on the Liguera.

No messing around on timings here, so has to be they romanced at home  ;D From that marriage notice, both their parents, Charles Andrew and Samuel Hecker are already deceased, which fits with what we have for Mary Andrew in 1881.

Big Secker family in 1861 living in Wakefield, everyone showing as born in Wakefield apart from Samuel:

Samuel Secker 47, general practitioner b. Ryhill, Yorkshire
Elizabeth Walker Secker 41
Ada Emeline Secker 18
Maria Louisa Secker 17
Agnes Mirian Secker 15
George Herbert Secker 12
Walkr Vernon Secker 11
Samuel Wilfred Secker 9
Elizabeth Burrell Secker 7
Arthur Wellesley Secker 6
Grace Gertrude Secker 3
Charles Ernest Secker 2
Alice Maude Secker 1

Ref: RG9, Piece 3425, Folio 57 Page 7

By 1871, Grace shows as a pupil and living in Knaresborough.

Her father shows as widowed by 1871. The family mis-transcribed on the index I am looking at Jecker/Secker, and living in Wakefield:

Samer D Jecker 57, surgeon and general practioner b. Wraby Yorkshire
Arthur Wellesley Jecker 17
Elizabeth Burnell Jecker 18
Charles Ernest Jacker 12
Henry M Secker 10
Mary Ann Secker 58, sister b. b. Wraby Yorkshire
Arthur Billinson Secker 19, assistant
Mathree Ellen 25

Monica,This has really opened up things for me.
I am going to look at what I have from Scotland and this page later today,Sunday to see  where I am going.

I appreciate  your energy and patience very  much.

Things my mother told me some  30 years ago about family are now starting to make sense.

You are very very kind to me !

Kind regards,

Philip
