1930s holidays from Redditch
« on: Saturday 12 February 11 15:21 GMT (UK) »
I know, from growing up in the area, that the general seaside destination for Midlanders was Weston Super Mare.  This is a distant cousin on holiday from the States in 1934 on a beach somewhere in the UK.  I don't think it's Weston.  Does anyone have any ideas where it is please?  He doesn't seem to be enjoying it too much!

Hi Graye

Its certainly not Weston as even though we had beach huts years ago, looking behind them its a bit of a slope to get onto the beach where as Weston is very flat. Its worth posting this picture on every site with the note "does anyone recognise this sea front" thats the best I can think of

All the very best

Phil

Thanks for that.  All my childhood recollections of Weston suggest it was very flat too but it was always the Midlanders' seaside resort of choice so I thought I woudl start there.

My mother had a look at the photo and suggested it could be Eastbourne or somewhere along that way so I'll post it on the Hampshire bit and see if that will solve the problem.

Hi
Eastbourne is in Sussex so I'd try that board as well.

Mind you Brighton and Eastbourne are both pebble beaches I believe.
Malmesbury- Bishop.
Gloucestershire-Bishop,Hicks,Higgs,Hill,Hooper,Hopkins,Pitcher,Robertson,Stinton,Terret,Woodruff.
Worcestershire-Stinton.
Devon- Borrough or Burrow.

Thanks for that.  Actually I meant Westbourne (nr Bournemouth) and wrote Eastbourne without thinking.  I agree about the pebbles and I recall from childhood visits that the area around Bournemouth is sandy so there is a chance it might be there though.

They were on a visit from the USA and I'm wondering how they would have travelled around in 1924 (which is when they were here).  I don't think any family members had cars but with Birmingham so close and Redditch station practically next door to the house they stayed in they probably went by train.  Worth checking Torquay as well then I suppose...

Hi Grave

This is a hell of a long shot - I wonder if it could be an old picture of Barry Island but I cant ever remember beach huts there but there may well have been & its another place thats well within striking distance from the Midlands

All the very best

The general "lay of the land" looks similar, doesn't it?  I'll see if I can find some old photos online to compare.  That building with the arches will probably be the key I think.  I'll probably just have to send the picture to the forums for each cosatal county and see if that will work!

Why not put this photo on a few news letters (I forget if you can attach a photo though) as you may get more response that way if you can do this
