Ireland Marriages
« on: Sunday 13 February 11 10:37 GMT (UK) »
I have an Austin Gibbons estimated birth year from census 1835 married to a Bridget ? est birth 1835.

1st child I have listed from census John Gibbons birth abt 1855

Occupations for Austin include 1861 coin porter 1871 freight clerk & provisions dealer 1881 warehouse keeper 1891 foreman in coin trade 1901 retired warehousman. On John's marriage cert Austin was a foreign weigher.

Residence in 1861 13 Hardwick Sq West Derby.

None of the census point to him coming from a specific part of Ireland.

Can anyone help with possible marriages ?

I am aware that there are a few Austin Gibbons and many Bridgets.

There were more children but some were born in Manchester but there was Patrick Gibbons born abt 1857 and an Austin Gibbons born abt 1860-61 that were born in Ireland.

I haven't ordered any of the birth certificates for the children born in Chorlton/Manchester yet as they too have only possible birth records

Full civil registration started in Ireland in 1864, and to search for records before that date you would need to try parish records.  To check what parish records are available you need to know the family religion and which parish (or townland etc) they lived in.

Non-Catholic marriages (e.g. Church of Ireland, Registry Office etc) were registered from 1845.

You probably need to get a birth certificate for one of the children to get Bridget's maiden name before trying to find any records in Ireland.

It's also worth check the later census returns for details of the children born in Ireland (Patrick and Austin jnr), to see if you can find where in Ireland they were born. Might be a clue to where their parents came from..

The 1911 census often gives detailed places of birth..

The name Austin Gibbons is very common in Co Mayo with 19 of them listed in Griffiths Valuation. (1856-64), A further 2 are listed in Co. Galway. So that’s a hint as to which area of Ireland he might have come from, based on the prevalence of the name there and it’s absence from all other parts of Ireland in Griffiths.

Thank you everyone for your help !

Unfortunately even the 1911 census' just have Ireland - I looked at that specifically ! Typical of my family.

I will endeavor to get birth certificates for a couple of the children.

Austin Gibbon's son John Gibbon's my gt gt grandfather married a Martha Cunnah from Wale's but I don't know if that indicate's his religion on the marriage certificate because surely this would have been Martha's parish. It was the Brunswick Chapel in Flintshire and that was a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel ? That is the marriage that indicate's Austin Gibbon's was a foreign weigher. 1875

I have no idea what a Methodist's religion is ? Should get on Google !

Wesleyan would be the same as Methodist. Very common in Wales but as you say likely got married in the bride's church.
