1871/1881 Dundee census look-up request by address
« on: Monday 18 April 05 15:42 BST (UK) »
Is it possible for someone to look at the 1871 and 1881 Dundee Census by address? The "Scotlandspeople" site only allows you to check by name.

Between 1874 and 1879  my Manchester relatives dashed up to Dundee to have one child and then dashed back down to Manchester to have the next. I was wondering which relatives they may have been staying with?

Address: 37, Ann Street, Dundee. (District of St. Andrew).

Thank you.

Thank you so much, Kenjo.

I was expecting a couple of names, but not more than 40 names!!! No wonder they soon dashed back to Manchester, I guess it was a case of "there was no room at the Inn", so to speak!!! But seriously, do you think that all those people were really living in the same house!!!!??? Mind boggling!!
I realise that your reply entailed an inordinate amount of typing, and as such, I would love to tell you that I had found some leads, but unfortunately it doesn't appear so yet. Sorry. But thank you for your huge effort.

Which means that 1871 is my last chance to find some possible relatives at that address.

My problem is that the fellow that I am chasing was born in France (Havre, as in Le Havre), so I guess that there is no birth certificate to give his parents' names, and although the Dundee birth record of his child conveniently provides the date and place of his marriage, that marriage is beginning to appear somewhat bogus, so no chance of his or his wife's parents' names from a marriage certificate- a real dead end!

But, there is still a slim chance of relatives at that address in Dundee in 1871, although the address doesn't really look like a "family home", does it?

Trying to remain optimistic,
UKgirl

Hi UKgirl,
The address, would most likely be a 3 story building, with apartments, so to speek. each group, is a different family living in a different, apartment. with the same street address.
what are the parents names?

Hello Kenjo,

Of course the couple themselves are in Manchester in both 1871 and 1881. It's the previous generation (names unknown) that I am seeking, perhaps via siblings etc.

It's just a matter of seeing the names in Dundee in 1871, and then trying to see if they match up against Manchester neighbours' names or somehow fit the picture, you know how it is...sometimes things just jump out and fit the puzzle. Nothing concrete to go on, really, except for the address. But from experience, families often live in close proximity to one another.

Thank you for trying to help.
