Irish Army births .....
« on: Sunday 13 February 11 15:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if someone could point me in the right direction of getting 2 BC's for people born while in service please?

I am trying to find a Helen Knight, born Kinsale in 1891 and a George WE Knight born in Dublin in 1889.

If, I believe I am right, the Father will be George Knight, and served in the AH&M Corps (Army Medical)

Would it be a simple case of applying to the Army records office, or would they be freely available as other irish births please?

Ireland was part of the UK at that stage, so there was no Irish army, just the British Army. The children's births should be listed with the usual civil records. Here's a possible Index match for Helen :

 Name: Helen Carruthers Lindsay Knight
 Registration district: Kinsale
 Event type:BIRTHS
 Quarter and year: Apr-Jun 1891
 Volume : 5 / Page: 328

and a possible match for George :

 Name: George William Edgar Knight
 Registration district: Dublin North
 Event type: Birth
 Quarter and year: Jan-Mar 1889
 Volume : 2 / Page: 455

Oooh that's them - THANK YOU

I did first look through the Military records on FindMyPast and only found the Army registration numbers .. I wouldn't need those then.

So I just order via GRO as normal then ???

The Baptism record for George is available on www.irishgenealogy.ie (free parish record website) :

 Baptism of George W.E. Knight - 13 March 1889
Parish is 'Arbour Hill Barracks', Church of Ireland

Parents names are George Knight and Eliza, fathers occupation is
'Corporal in Med. Staff Corps'.

that's fantastic - thank you VERY much indeed!

I have followed George (the Father) through the census years, and I have his Military records, which shows him married to a Catherine Fleming in 1877.  I wondered why there were TWO George Knights - he already has one called George.

I suspect now then that Catherine died, and George remarried to Eliza, and had Helen and George (the 2nd)

I have other children (on various census returns) suggesting they also had:
Margaret - 1879 - Ireland (I don't know where for this one)
Charlotte - 1880 - Ireland
Harry (Henry) 1881 - Trowbridge, Wilts
George 1882 - Trowbridge, Wilts

His military records confirm that he was based here through these years, but doesn't confirm he was back in Ireland when Helen and GWE was born.   In fact, it says he was staioned "Home".  Is it too much of a coincidence for ANOTHER George Knight born in 1851 in Bishops Waltham and in the Army Hospital and Medical Cto have had these children?????

'Home' on military records at that time would have meant somewhere in the UK - i.e. including Ireland before independence

There's a Charlotte Knight birth listed in the BMD Index in 1880 in Clonmel district (Co. Tipperary). Clonmel was a barracks town so a possible location for an army family.

The familysearch website is acting up for me at the moment so I cant access the full references at the moment. I'll post the details when it's back in action.
