Thanks Shane ... there is a VERY confusing link with this family ... as Helen Carruthers Lindsay Knight shows the Father to be George Knight and his occupation fits as the George I have been tracing.  It would surely be too much of a coincidence to have 2 Georges with the same occupation - wouldn't it?

I have "my" George and Catherine (nee Fleming) on the 1891 census in the SOldiers Barracks in Northumberland.  All Georges military records confirm these areas ...

but ... how can the same George be the Father of Helen and GWE Knight in 1889 and 1891???

There is also a link to the Kavanagh family, as we have GWE Knight with his "Aunt/Great Aunt" Eliza Jane Kavanagh on the 1911 census.  I believe she was married to Patrick Kavanagh, and I have them on the 1881 census, and they have a Daughter Helen Carruthers Lindsay Kavanagh, that wold have been born in 1872 (she died) .. guessing that's where Helen CL Knight got her name from.

For the life of me, I can't find the link now .. and going off in all directions ....  just to add to the fire, there is a marriage for a Mary Fleming to a John Kavanagh (so I believe these 2 families to be linked in more ways than one!)

I managed to catch a quick look at the extracted birth record for a Margaret Knight born 1878 in Clonmel, and her parents are George Knight and Catherine Flemming. The birth is 26th Dec, so could have been registered in 1879.

I'll keep trying the familysearch website..

Here are the two possible civil index matches :

 Name:    Charlotte Knight
 Registration District:    Clonmel
 Event Type: Birth
Quarter and Year:    Apr - Jun 1880
 Volume : 4 / Page: 576

 Name:   Margaret Knight
 Registration district:   Clonmel
 Event type: Birth
 Quarter and year: Oct-Dec 1878
 Volume : 4 / Page : 610

Margaret's birth also seems to be in the extracted collection :

 Name: Margaret Knight
 Birth Date: 26 Dec 1878
 Birthplace: Tipperary
 Father's Name: George Knight
 Mother's Name: Catherine Flemming

curiouser and curiouser ...

I have George William E Knight (1889) on the 1891 census as being in the Duke of Yorks Military Asylum.  There is also a "Bertie" Knight there (born 1891 in Ireland.  I found "Bertie" on the 1911 census, and his POB is now shown as Tipperary (in 1911 he's in India)

I am getting VERY confused now ...

Thank you SO much for the information you're finding though ....

this one is pretty close to the right age., and I think  it fits the timeframe... i.e. (just) after the births of Charlotte and Margaret, but before the birth of George jnr:

 Name: Catherine Knight
 Registration district: Dublin North
 Event type: Death
 Quarter and year: Jul-Sep 1880
Age:   26  (est Year of birth 1854)
 volume : 2 / Page: 429

The district is the same as the birth for George - Dublin north city. There's also a possible marriage for George soon after that death :

 Name: George Knight
 Registration District: Rathdown
 Event Type: Marriage
Registration Quarter and Year: Jul-Sep 1880
 Volume : 2 / Page : 734

It's just a possibility at the moment, but I'll see if there's a cross-match to an Eliza/Elizabeth. Rathdown covers south east county Dublin plus a section in Co. Wicklow.
