purp72,that is one great picture, thank you so much.
I am adding that to my folio on William Milward of Cardiff who died in 1885.

Thank you so much for your kindness,

Extract from Western Mail - 28 April 1879

BUSINESSES FOR DISPOSAL
CARDIFF - To Let - The East Dock Hotel; full licensed house; free;

purp72, sorry to bother you but I am hoping you might be able to explain what is meant by "free" and " full licensed house" in regard to the East Dock Hotel.
If/when it is convenient to you, I would be happy to hear from you.

Cheers,

phipps

I think that full licensed house simply means that the hotel is licensed to sell alcohol. "Free" means that it is a free house - ie. it is not tied to a particular brewery and can buy its beer/wines/spirits from any supplier.

There was also "Prince of Wales"  pub/inn at 275 Bute Street, Cardiff.
Edward Kidney is listed as Victuallar 1881/1891 Census.
There is a website, which I can't find at the moment
"Cardiff inns and pubs by Phil Roderick"
May be listed on this web site.

Hi,

I have a copy of the page from the 1863 Wakeford's Cardiff Driectory - and this lists William Millward as the proprietor of the British Volunteer Inn, Hayes.

Thanks,

Darin.
